She ignored me as we exited the elevator and headed down the hall to her place.

Rebecca’s apartment was bright and airy, with hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and a wide-open floor plan. The kitchen was to the right, with stainless steel appliances, a double oven, and a large granite island. The living room sported a large fireplace with views of the city from an expansive balcony. The hall was lined with three doors, which I assumed were bedrooms and a bathroom. The decor was plush with a Victorian vibe. It reminded me of a cross between a lady’s boudoir and Sherlock Holmes’s library.

“I’m going to shower and get dressed really quick.” She motioned for me to wait in the living room. I settled onto a cobalt blue velvet sofa.

“You know you can get a few million if you sell this place,” I remarked. I had no idea why I offered Rebecca an out to our marriage. Lord knows my family business needed this alliance.

“I know, but it was my grandmother’s home.”

“Your grandparents didn’t live together?”

“Yes, but this was her private home.”

“Okay.” I guess there are parts of high society that I’ll never understand.

She headed down the hall and closed the bedroom door behind her. I glanced at the books on the wide, oak bookcase. Most of them are cookbooks, but there are some novels and history books in the mix. I opened one of the holiday baking books and flipped through the pages. After thumbing through a few books, I returned to my seat and looked at my watch. We were going to be late. The traffic getting to Beacon Hill was a nightmare.

“Are you almost ready?” I hollered.

No answer.

“Women,” I muttered as I pulled out my phone to check my emails, mainly looking for an update on the Dover Mall project.

“I’m ready.”

I looked up from my phone and licked my lips. Rebecca was stunning. A long white dress outlined her curves, fitting her like a glove. Her hair fell over her shoulders in gentle waves, and her soft makeup highlighted her round cheeks and doe-eyes. The dress’s neckline offered a small peek of her cleavage, leaving enough to the imagination. My cock twitched as I imagined pulling her sweet buds between my teeth.

“Uh,” I cleared my throat. “You look nice,” I mumbled as I stood up.

“Your engagement gift will be delivered here later today. It was at your parent’s house last night, but …”

The words died on my lips as she walked to the kitchen island to retrieve her purse. The dress has a slit, and I catch a glimpse of her leg.

I forced my gaze to meet her eyes. “It’s a luxury SUV, the latest model. You’ll look great driving around in it.”

Rebecca’s brows arched. “That’s really generous of you, considering the amount of money you are already giving my family. Thank you.”

I shrugged. “You’re my fiancé, and I’m wealthy. The gift needs to be a showstopper.” I glanced at my watch. “Let’s go. I don’t want to be late.”

We walked to my car, an antique Mustang I restored myself. I didn’t often drive it, but today I was in the mood for something different. She slid into the passenger seat and buckled up while I started the car.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, looking at her. “Are you going to be sick? Throwing up in this car is not an option.”

“No,” she snapped. “I took something for my headache in the house. I don’t want to deal with my mother.”

I shrugged and pulled away from the curb. “You should have thought about that before you decided to get drunk at a club and miss your party.”

“Thanks for the compassion.”

I noted the sarcasm in her voice, continuing, “I’m stating the facts. All actions have consequences. If you aren’t adult enough to face the consequences, don’t do the action.”

“You sound like a college professor scolding his students.”

“You acted like a wild college student last night.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “I’m only twenty-two.”

“Is that always going to be your excuse?”
