“What’s up?” I could hear him sniffling, “Are you okay?”

“No,” he said quickly, “We were in a car accident. I’m at the hospital. I’m fine, but Jasmine, she’s pretty messed up.”

It felt like all the air in the room evaporated within seconds.

“What?”

“I- she was in the passenger seat. It all happened so fast. Her parents are on that trip. I didn’t know who else to call,” Jay’s voice broke, and he dissolved into sobs. I got up and reached for my T-shirt, setting the phone down so I could pull it over my head.

“What hospital are you at?” I asked.

Sebastian looked over at me. “Hospital?” he mouthed.

“Boston Memorial,” Jay said.

“I’ll be right there. Can I call you when I’m on my way?” I asked.

“Sure,” Jay said.

“Okay, I’ll see you soon.” I hung up the phone and sprang into action seconds later. I found my shoes and shoved my feet inside. Sebastian lay on the bed, shirtless and alarmed.

“Who’s in the hospital?” he asked.

I took a steadying breath, but it was no use. Tears streamed down my face. “It’s Jasmine,” I said shakily. “She was in a car accident. I’m so sorry. I have to go see her.” I said frantically. Sebastian got up and grabbed my hand.

“I’ll go with you. You’re in no condition to drive; which hospital?”

“She’s at B-b-Boston Memorial,” I said between sobs. In a rare moment of tenderness, Sebastian wrapped me in his arms and held me close to his chest as my shoulders wracked with sobs.

“It’ll be okay,” he said weakly.

“But what if it’s not?!” I wailed, “Even if the car wreck didn’t kill her, she- she could have internal injuries! Sebastian, I can’t lose her. We’re like sisters!”

“You won’t lose her,” Sebastian consoled. He fished his shirt off the floor and shrugged it back on. Then, he grabbed his keys from the bedside table and grabbed my hand in the other, “Now let’s go see her, okay? I’m sure you’ll feel better once you talk with a doctor. The team at Boston Memorial is great. They did my uncle’s bypass surgery last year. Jasmine’s in the best possible hands,” Sebastian said.

“Jasmine!” I sobbed as I entered the hospital room. Jay was stationed at her bedside. Other than a few cuts and scrapes on his face, he looked okay. Jasmine’s face was covered in bruises. Her forehead was swollen, and she had a large gash along her cheek. Her right arm was in a cast.

“They gave her something for the pain. The nurse said it’d make her sleepy,” Jay explained. I walked over to him and immediately hugged him.

“Thank you so much for calling me.”

Jay smiled sheepishly, “You were her emergency contact.”

Jay pulled up a spare chair, and I sat down, moving Jasmine’s hair away from her forehead as gently as I could.

“Hey, girl,” I whispered.

Jasmine opened her eyes. Once she saw me, she started smiling.

“Hey,” she whispered. Her voice was hoarse. Jay handed her a Styrofoam cup full of water with a straw. She took a small sip.

“I came the minute I heard,” I explained. I gestured toward Sebastian, “I mean, we came.”

Jasmine glanced over at Sebastian, who was hovering awkwardly in the doorway. He walked over to Jasmine’s bedside and sat on the other side of us.

“Becca had me breaking every traffic law known to man to get to you,” he joked.

Jasmine grinned. “I can’t laugh because it hurts my ribs. But that sounds like Becca.”
