I take a step away from her because I don’t know her that well and I really don’t want to lose myself to my instincts here. If it were up to me, I would wrap my arm around her waist and pull her close.

“Thank you,” she says softly as I take a step back.

I nod. “Of course,” I reply.

She looks at my reflection with narrow, smoky eyes. “You are coming to the party, right?”

“I’m already here,” I say. “I don’t have anything else to do.”

She turns around so she can face me. “Don’t you have spells to craft or potions to brew?”

“I can do those things later,” I say, returning her smile. “I think tonight I’m just going to get drunk instead.”

“Lucky you. I think I’m supposed to keep it professional.”

“You’re a rock star,” I say.

She scoffs at that.

“Keeping it professional means, I don’t know, doing coke off a stripper’s ass or something.”

“Oh? And you have experience with that?”

“None,” I say. I watch her seriously as she bites her bottom lip. I want to lean over and kiss her. I don’t do anything of her sort, obviously. I’m a professional. We both are. “But I’ve watched my fair share of rock documentaries.”

She chuckles. “You’re funny.”

“Yeah, I’m a comedian when I’m not doing this.”

She shakes her head. “For what it’s worth, I’m not looking forward to this,” she says. “It’s been such a long day. I just want to go to bed and sleep.”

“There will be time for that. You wouldn’t want to miss this.”

She raises her eyebrows.

“I promise. You’ll have fun.”

“I’ll hold you to that,” she says.

I nod. “If you’re not having fun, let me know and I’ll help you get out of there.”

“Thanks, Dom,” she says. “It’s nice to already be making friends.”

She doesn’t say anything else as I open the door and lead the way. My arm brushes against hers as I push through the doorway and she seems to freeze for a second, but she doesn’t move away.

I’m all too aware of her presence as we make our way to the elevator. Her hair catches the light from one of the naked bulbs in the hallway and it’s beautiful. Her skin looks soft and pale. She walks slowly toward the elevator, probably because of the platform shoes she’s wearing.

“Where’s the rest of the band?” I ask her as I press the elevator button.

“Dispersed at some point,” she says. “I think Trine is with Misha, obviously, and the rest of the girls…I don’t really know.”

“You seem relieved.”

“I love them. I just like peace and quiet every now and then.”

I hold back a smirk. “Yeah,” I say. “I can tell you’re in the mood to party.”
