“To be honest,” I say after taking a sip of my drink, which is far too strong. “I’m a little nervous.”

“That’s normal.”

“We don’t play the same kind of music,” I say. “What if your fans hate us?”

“My fans won’t hate you. I’ve heard your music. You guys are good.”

I smile. “Thank you, but that doesn’t mean that your fans are going to like us. Like I said, we play different genres of music.”

“Right. For what it’s worth, I would think of it as a stepping stone. You’re going to be opening for a pretty big act, that looks good for you guys.”

I smirk. “So you do know how much of a big deal you are.”

He shakes his head. “Londyn, my manager, she’s always talking about it,” he says. “Sounds fake to me still, but she’s smarter than I am, so I try to listen to her.”

I smile at him. He seems to be sincere. “How long has she been your manager?”

“I don’t know. It’s been a couple of years. She’s really good at her job. As soon as things started taking off, she sorta knew exactly what to capitalize on. That’s why I trust her on this tour. It wasn’t my idea to do a horror theme national tour, but…Londyn knows what she’s doing. She let me pick between a few bands for supporting acts and I chose you because you guys are good, so…”

I laugh, throwing my head back. “Thanks.”

“What? Did I say something funny?”

I shake my head, finishing the last of my drink. “No,” I say. “It’s just that horror has sort of become our specialty. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t figured out how or why exactly, it just…”

He waits for me to finish.

“Kind of fell into our lap,” I say.

“Do you like it?”

“As a brand? Sure,” I reply. “It’s fun. I don’t know how fun it is to live it.”

He cocks his head. He clearly wants ask me more questions, but before he can, someone is standing next to me, whispering in my ear. “We need to wrap it up,” Devon says. Fuck, where did he come from? I didn’t even know he was watching me.

“Aren’t we supposed to be socializing?”

He nods. “Yes, but you’re also supposed to be getting your beauty sleep,” he says. “You still have one more day to recover, but I’m rounding the rest of the band up and forcing you all to go to bed.”

“Listen to your manager,” Javi says. “They always know what they’re talking about.”

It’s still hard for me to see Devon as my manager, considering where I know him from, but I think Javi is right. I think he has our best interests at heart. And while there’s a part of me that wants to stay at the party, because I’m enjoying talking to Javi, I am exhausted, and my head is still pounding even though the pills did take the edge off a bit.

“Fine,” I say. “It was really nice to get to talk to you, Javi.”

“You too. You’re the…drummer, right?”

“Yes,” I say.

“Cool,” he says. “You’ll have to teach me some things about the drums.”

I smile at him, nodding. I’m aware I’ll probably see him a lot throughout this tour, but I don’t think we’re going to have that much time to talk. Our schedule is wild. “If you have time.”

“Alright,” he says. He’s saying something else, but Devon is pulling me by the wrist. His grip around me isn’t exactly harsh, but he’s not being gentle, either. There’s a sense of urgency to him that he normally doesn’t have and if I wasn’t as tired as I am right now, I’m sure I would find it more than just a little disconcerting. Right now, it’s kind of bizarre, and I don’t really think about questioning him.

We’re standing in front of the elevator, away from the lounge, in only a few seconds. He lets go of me and I tilt my head as I look at him. “Where’s the rest of the band?”

“No idea,” he replies.
