He's right. I didn't notice.

"What happened?"

"Nothing happened."

I try to swallow down the knot in my throat. "You said the electricity would come back."

"No. I said the electricity might come back," he says.

I shake my head. "I don't think you should try this," I say. "What if the electricity does come back and then you get stuck or something? I'd rather not see that."

He considers this for a second and then steps away. "In that case, then maybe what we need to do is wait."

He pulls away from the door and sighs as the doors slam closed.

"Do you want your phone back?"

"Yeah," he says. I look at him, his features flooded in the white light of his phone, his eyes darker than before. He shields them with the palm of his hand and flashes me a tight smile as I put the phone away and hand it to him. Our fingers touch for a second and he takes a moment to smile at me. I can see it from the light on the display of his phone, even though the flashlight is now off. "We might want to conserve the battery."

"Conserve the battery," I echo, my heart hammering in my chest. "That doesn't sound great."

"Well, it's…I mean, it is what it is," he says. "We might want to just chill here. Someone will find us."

"Do you have any signal on your phone?"

He messes with it for a few seconds. "No," he replies. "It's completely dead in here."

"Even for emergencies?"

He messes with the phone for a few seconds, then sighs. "Sorry, Alana," he says. "I think we're just going to have to wait."

I shake my head. He's right, of course, and I was dreading hearing those words. The tiny elevator seems to have gotten smaller over the past few minutes, but I know that's not possible. My feet hurt. I kick my shoes off and sit down on the cold floor. Dom does the same thing, and the elevator shakes slightly when he does. I curl my fingers around the floor, which obviously doesn't help at all because there's nothing for me to grip. "This sucks."

"I know. I'm sorry."

"It's not your fault," I say.

"Right, but…this is your first night here. In my city. In my country. You can't be having a good time."

I laugh a little. This place has seemed perfectly lovely up until this minute. "It's not your fault that we're stuck in this elevator," I tell him. "Unless you did some of your weird witch juju to get me alone."

"Not a chance. I have no idea how this happened," he says, a smile creeping into his voice.

At least he's not horrible to get stuck in an elevator with. I can't imagine getting stuck here with Misha. I wonder what we would talk about. Trine's possession? No, thank you. Though I suppose there isn't much difference here, considering that it seems like Dom is very interested in her. In everything that happened. But he's had the courtesy not to ask, which I genuinely appreciate. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. "So why don't you witchcraft your way out of this one?" I ask.

He picks up his head to look at me. "Okay," he says and I can see the white of his teeth when he smiles. "Let me try."

There's no way that I can stay here until three in the morning, and anyway, I'm trying to get better sleep. It's helping me with my skin and my metabolism and my trainer—and my doctor, obviously—always say that I need to get better sleep. Of course, it's hard getting good sleep when I'm wired and I've just had a few drinks. I want to stay. But when Londyn gives me a look, I know it's time to get back to my room. Alana isn't here anymore and after a few minutes, I realize I don't want to be here either.

I go outside to get a bit of fresh air when the ground starts shaking. I'm no stranger to earthquakes, but they're always unpredictable and always take me by surprise, so I try to move to a place without any trees. The only place I can think of to go is the parking lot, which isn't a particularly good place to stand. The building moves from side to side and for a second, I worry that it's going to collapse on top of me. People run out of the hotel and stand around, chattering excitedly. Someone behind me asks if they're really drunk or if the world is actually shaking, and her friend tells her to shut up. I wonder where Alana is. She isn't with her band—they're all standing together near the door. Without her.

"Where is she?" I ask as Londyn stands next to me.

"The drummer?" Londyn asks after a beat. "I don't know. Do you want me to keep tabs on her?"
