The fog is still so thick that, if there wasn’t a railing here, I think I might have just walked off the edge of the hotel and into my death.

“Maybe without the fog, it’s romantic out here,” Javi mentions softly.

I hug myself. “Kind of creepy right now, though,” I say.

He flashes me a smile. It’s bright enough to cut through the atmosphere. “Don’t worry. If there are ghosts out here, I’ll protect you.”

I laugh, feeling myself relax a little. He has such a calming presence. Being around him always makes me feel better.

We stand there for a few minutes, looking out at the view. I can see the lights of the city in the distance, and the stars twinkling above us. It's beautiful, but I can't help feeling a sense of unease.

Javi’s hand is on the railing, his fingers close to me but not touching me. We’re both aware that people are watching us from inside. Still, just that brief touch sends a jolt of electricity up my body as I remember the night that we spent together.

It was only a few days ago, but it feels like it was years.

I want him so much.

“You’re really good,” he says.

I look at him, questioning.

“At drumming, I mean,” he says. “You’re…it’s wonderful to watch you play.”

I laugh under my breath. “Are you joking?” I ask. “You’re such an amazing singer and you have so much stage presence. I loved watching you. I loved playing to this crowd, but watching you…I could tell you were in your element. Watching you perform was the best part of the night.”

Javi's eyes light up at my words, and he leans in closer. I can feel the electricity between us, the tension building.

“I don’t know about that,” he says softly. “I think the best part of the night is happening right now.”

He leans down. His face is inches away from mine, and I think he’s going to kiss me…

But he doesn’t. He just watches me intently, his brown eyes sparkling.

“You’re so fucking beautiful, Alana,” he says, dropping his voice to a whisper. “After my divorce, I slept with a lot of girls, but never anyone like you.”

I shake my head, my cheeks reddening. “I…”

“Wait,” he says, a smile on his face. “That was a compliment. I realize how that sounded.”

“I understood what you meant,” I say.

“If we were somewhere private, I would kiss you right now.”

I nod, looking into the venue. People are watching us, but it doesn’t seem like they’re paying that much attention. “So let’s go somewhere more private.”

“I thought you were sharing your room,” I say.

She nods. “Yeah, but Bryony knows. I didn’t tell her. She just…she could see me staring at you, I guess.”

“Okay,” he says, leaning down so he can whisper into my ear. “In that case, go ahead and go to your room. I’ll join you in ten minutes.”

“What if someone sees you?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “No one’s going to see me,” he says softly, winking at me. “I know this might come as a shock to you, but I’ll be careful. Just let Bryony know so she doesn’t walk in on us.”

I nod, my mouth suddenly dry. The idea that he’s going to go into my room tonight makes my heart beat faster.

He squeezes my hand softly before he turns away and goes back inside.
