Dom sits on the edge of my bed. He’s so close to me I can smell the scent of his shampoo. Crazy to think he just had a shower when he looks so bad. “I didn’t sleep a wink,” he says. “I kept hearing…footsteps, going back and forth.”

“People were cleaning after the gig,” Bryony offers.

“On the roof?” he counters.

Bryony looks at me.

“I didn’t hear anything,” I tell Dom.

“We were asleep,” Bryony says. “Like you said, it was late.”

He shakes his head. “Someone’s been out on the roof,” he says. “I thought…I thought maybe it was just me, and then I heard some roadies talking about seeing a shadow on the roof, so I know I didn’t imagine it.”

“This place feels haunted,” Bryony says. “And isn’t that your purview, Dom?”

He shudders. “I’m here to protect Trine. To do a job. The rest of you are incidental.”

He says it as his gaze lingers on mine, as if he’s trying to apologize for calling me incidental. I don’t mind. He’s here to do a job, just like I’m here to play music.

We’re not here to get involved with anyone else. Neither one of us. Any of us.

“So, go protect her,” Bryony says. “You’re a…whatever you are. Go find out what’s happening on the roof.”

Dom and I look at each other.

He brushes himself off and stands up. “You’re right,” he says. “You’re right, I just…I wanted to check in on you guys first.”

“Wait,” I hear myself say. “I’ll go with you.”

“You’ll go with him?” Bryony exclaims. “Are you fucking crazy?”

“It’s just a roof. Coward,” I say. “Just…give me a second to get dressed.”

Dom looks me up and down, his cheeks reddening. I’m still barely covered by the blanket, but Bryony is right. The room smells like sex and the night is clear on my skin–or at least, it should be clear to someone who has as good of a view of my body as Dom does.

Bryony looks at me, her eyes widening as she does. “Are you sure about this?” she asks.

She doesn’t know about me and Dom, but I think she understands that we shouldn’t be alone right now. Who knows? Maybe she’s right. Maybe we'll end up trapped in an elevator together again.

But Bryony has no reason to worry. I’m helping him ghost hunt, I definitely don’t intend to fuck him.

I don’t intend for anything to happen.

“I’m definitely sure, Bryony,” I say. “I thought you didn’t believe in ghosts.”

“Yeah, I didn’t, and then my best friend was possessed, and there were demons during one of our shows. My opinions have changed. I’m surprised yours haven’t.”

“That was just a mosh pit that got out of control,” I say under my breath.

“The priest had to bless the water in your pool so people would stop attacking us. Totally, a mosh pit getting out of control.”

I roll my eyes, but there’s a smile on my face. “Okay, fine. But I’m still going.”

Dom looks at me for a moment before nodding. “Alright,” he says. “Let’s go.”

I have to get dressed before we go anywhere. I don’t ask him to leave, though. Bryony grabs her phone from her nightstand, but I know she’s watching us from the corner of her eye.

I take my time. I need to speak to Dom–I need to tell him what happened last night. I don’t know if he’s going to be jealous, but I think he deserves to be in the loop. I put on a white t-shirt, dark jeans and my sneakers. I put my hair up in a high ponytail quickly and then tell Dom I’m ready.
