“Good. We have some reviews from the first show and people were, you know, pretty impressed.”

“I’ve been staying away from the press.”

“I know you have,” Londyn says, smiling. “That’s why you have me.”

I shake my head, but I’m still excited to hear this. Londyn looks like she has good news. “They loved it. Every single article I can find is raving about you,” she says. “Of course there’s some gossip about Vanessa, but that doesn’t seem to be the headline at all.”

“What is the headline?”

“Javi is back, better than ever,” Londyn says. “If you can see him on this tour, do it.”

“That’s great,” Alana says.

I nod. “Yeah, it’s pretty awesome.”

We’re not far, so it only takes a few minutes for the bus to pull up to the venue. When it does, my nerves start to kick in. It’s one thing to perform in front of small crowds, but this is a big concert hall. I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. Alana notices my anxiety and gives me a reassuring smile. “You got this, Javi,” she says, squeezing my shoulder. “I believe in you.”

“How are you feeling?” I ask.

“Less pressure than you, probably,” she says. “Considering we’re just the opening act. But you’re going to be great.”

“So are you. Break a leg.”

Her words give me a boost of confidence and I step out of the bus, ready to take the stage. Before I do, Johnny Baskets is due to go on stage, and the environment around us is buzzing.

The crowd is excited to see them and the girls are eating up the energy.

Alana marks the start of a song with her drums and the rest of the band joins in.

As I watch them perform, I can't help but feel proud of Alana. She is a natural talent and her passion for music is evident in the way she plays. She’s an excellent drummer, getting lost in the music, her touch soft, her rhythm groovy. I could watch her for ages.

I turn to Misha who is still wearing his necklace and he catches my eye. I haven’t really spoken to him since we’ve met, but I’m glad we actually have a little time to talk.

“You believe in all this magic stuff?” I ask him.

“I don’t know what I believe,” he says. “But after everything I’ve seen, it would be hard not to think there’s more than…than what we can see.”

“You’re a demonhunter?” I ask. “That’s your job title?”

He smirks at me. “It’s only marginally less ridiculous than rock star.”

I laugh. “You got me there.”

Everyone copes with fear differently and if believing in magic helps Misha get through the day, then so be it. I don’t know if Dom is telling the truth, but I do know that Alana seemed frightened, and I don’t think that she’s lying.

I don’t see why she would lie.

As Johnny Baskets finish their set, it's my band’s turn to take the stage. The crowd cheers and claps, some even call for an encore. The energy in the venue is electric, and I can feel it coursing through my veins.

“Should they do one more?” I ask Londyn.

She opens her mouth to answer me, but before she can, Trine drops her bass to the floor in front of her.

And she lunges at Alana.

Alana

Thesetwasgreat. We sounded good and the crowd is happy. Trine turns to look at me, a smile on her face, and I smile back at her. A shadow falls on her face and I’m about to ask her what’s going on when she drops her bass on the floor in front of her, the instrument banging on the floor. The movement causes feedback, but the sound tech kills the speaker almost immediately.
