“She’s my friend, Dom,” I say. “She’s been through enough.”

Trine doubles down on the floor, kneeling down, choking on the smoke. Her eyes are red as she looks up at me. “Al,” she says. “I’m sorry. I tried to stop it, I couldn’t do anything, I…”

“It’s okay,” I say, leaning down so I can face her. “It’s okay, you didn’t mean to do that, that wasn’t you.”

“I saw myself hurting you, Al. I saw it and I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t do anything. I feel like such an asshole.”

“That wasn’t you, Trine. That was something happening toyou.”

“Do you know what it wants?” I ask, my mind whirling with possibilities. “Is there something you’re supposed to do?”

Trine shakes her head. “I don’t know. It just…wants me to hurt people. I thought they'd gotten rid of it, but it's like, I don 't know, it's like it never fucking leaves. Like it lives inside me and grows and is trying to take hold no matter how much I try to hold back."

I feel a chill run down my spine at her words. “We’ll figure it out,” I say, trying to make it sound more convincing than it feels. “We’ll find a way to stop whatever’s coming after us.”

Dom clears his throat, interrupting our conversation. “Fine. But we need to be careful. We can’t let anyone know what happened here. It’ll create a panic and draw unwanted attention.”

I nod, understanding the gravity of the situation. We need to keep this under wraps, at least until we figure out what’s going on.

"What about Javi?" I ask.

"He's on stage," Dom says. "The show must go on and all that."

"Fuck," I whisper under my breath.

“Well, we can’t stay here,” Misha says. He’s been standing next to Trine all this time, holding onto her, but not saying anything. He looks extremely concerned. “Trine is right. We need to lie low. We need to give her some time to rest.”

I nod, feeling a sense of dread wash over me. This is not what I had imagined when I signed up for this tour. I had thought that it would be a fun adventure, a way to live out my dream of being a rock star. Now, I'm not so sure. There's something dark and dangerous lurking beneath the surface of all this, something that I'm not sure I'm ready to face.

But I can't back down now. Trine needs me, and I won't let her down.

"Let's go," I say, standing up and offering Trine a hand. "We'll figure this out together."

Trine gives me a grateful smile and takes my hand. Together, we walk out of the backstage area, leaving behind the chaos and the smoke. Behind us, the sound of Javi's guitar fills the air, a reminder of what we're leaving behind.

But it doesn’t matter. We need to leave.

The city is bustling, and Dom flags down a taxi to take us to a motel somewhere nearby. The whole thing happens quickly. Trine is too shaken up to say much, and Misha wraps a protective arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to him.

Dom watches her too, every now and then flashing me a tight smile, and I resist the urge to rub my neck, though it stings from when she tried to strangle me.

Dom

Ihopethatmyface doesn’t betray just how terrified I am. I’m supposed to be the one with the occult knowledge here but when I saw the way Trine was behaving I felt the kind of fear I’ve only ever felt once before in my life.

That time, I didn’t come out victorious. In fact, that time, I almost died. But I don’t have to disclose that right now because, right now, what I need to do is make sure that Alana is protected.

The demon was quite clear with his intentions. He’s coming after Alana. He wants to possess her, do God knows what with her. My presence here is incidental. I just got lucky that the thing I’d cooked up for Trine worked in the first place, but that was a gamble.

It paid off, but it was still a gamble.

Trine looks like she’s going to pass out and Alana looks ahead, not quite focused on anything until the taxi gets to the motel.

We pile out of the taxi, Misha helping Trine to walk. I keep a tight grip on Alana’s hand, making sure she doesn’t wander too far from me. I don’t give a shit if they see us. I just want to make sure that she’s okay.

I can hear the hum of electricity around us, the bright neon lights of the motel casting an eerie glow over everything. It’s not the kind of place I’d choose to stay in, but it’ll have to do for now.

As we walk towards the check-in counter, I feel the weight of the situation settle heavily on my shoulders. I haven’t felt this out of my depth in a long time, maybe ever.
