She cocks her head. “You can help with what?”

“With your gear,” I say. “I mean, it’ll be easier if it’s all of us, right?”

She doesn’t seem to believe me. She keeps a brow raised in the air, waiting for me to say something else.

“Or I can get out of your way,” I say.

“I wouldn’t turn down the help,” the girl with pink hair says. The drummer turns to look at her over her shoulder, narrowing her eyes but still saying nothing.

I grab a handle of one of the gear bags and flash Londyn an apologetic smile. “I’ll be down in a minute,” I say. “I promise.”

They have a lot of gear, but it doesn’t take very long before we lug it together up to someone’s room. I think he might be their manager–I know he’s not in the band. He’s pretty chatty, unlike the blonde girl with the red stripes in her hair. I don’t want to talk to him. I want to talk to her.

Once all the instruments are in his room, she does turn to me and smiles, her dark eyes shining. “Thank you,” she says softly.

“Of course. I know you had a long trip.”

There are other people walking around us, talking about gear, talking about the trip. I’m not paying attention to them. I’m only paying attention to her. Everyone else blurs into the background, everything else doesn’t seem to matter.

“You’re nicer than I expected you to be,” she says softly.

“Ah, yes,” I reply. “I do have a reputation for being an asshole.”

She smirks. “That’s not what I said.”

“Hey, the press only prints the truth.”

“In that case, you seem like a very nice guy,” she says. “Really.”

“I haven’t read anything about you.”

“You’ll just have to rely on what I tell you,” she says, wrinkling her nose. It’s really cute when she does that. Her dark eyes shine.

“Maybe we can get to know each other better at the party,” I tell her.

She nods. “Give us a few minutes to, you know, clean up. I promise I look decent after a shower.”

I nod. I want to tell her that she looks more than decent now, but I won’t. I think it’s probably better if I keep my opinions about her to myself. “I look forward to it.”

As if Londyn can smell that this is a good time to swoop in, she hooks a hand around my arm and starts to pull me away. She flashes me a smile as she leads me out of the room. When the door is closed behind us, she picks her head up to look at me again. “It’s my job to remind you not to get distracted, Javi,” she says.

“I’m not distracted.”

She pouts. “Once you finish this tour, you can do whatever you want,” she says softly. “But for now, you need to focus on work. That’s the reason you insisted on coming, right?”

I don’t like it when she uses my own words against me.

“I’m focused on work. That was work.”

She rolls her eyes. “Alright, Javi,” she says. “You’re the boss.”

There’s a note of derision in her voice, which I completely understand. Whenever she calls me the boss, it’s always a subtle reminder that she knows better.

“Hey, I’m not going to do anything stupid,” I say.

She cocks her head. “Do you mean that?”

“Yes,” I tell her. “You’re here to help me make good decisions, right?”
