He nods.

That’s not really what I was expecting, but it wouldn’t exactly be unusual. Dad works closely with the state’s attorney. They have people who go out specifically to serve subpoenas, and sometimes they must pick places they know you’re going to be. Like game seven of the cup playoffs.

Apprehension prickles up my back. “Is this about your brother?”

His expression changes to confusion. “What?”

“About—” I shake my head. “Never mind. What did you get served with?”

He shifts again. “Papers.”

“You’re so fucking forthcoming.” I reach for the bacon on his plate.

“Stop,” Knox hisses. He shoots up. “You know what? I’m not talking about this.”

He’s serious.

That has me more worried than anything. When has Knox Whiteshaweverbeen serious? He steps out of the booth and manages to take one step before I’m calling out after him.

“I’m sorry,” I mutter when he returns to his seat. I slide the plate back to him, along with the coffee. “I won’t ask.”

“But you will pry, huh?”

“Yeah, I’m gonna call up my dad’s secretary and see what you’ve got yourself involved in. I’ll let her fill me in on the trouble you’re causing.”

To my shock, he actually relaxes. “You go ahead and do that.”

I watch him as we both return to our breakfasts. He doesn’t mind me going there—which means it probably isn’t something that a police station in New York would have access to. If it was even legal to search for that kind of thing.

“So, what’s up with Melody?”

I shrug. “Nothing.”

“She just… left to go hang out with her friends in a high-rise you can’t get into?” His tone is skeptical.

Which, honestly,fair.

“Her ex-husband is being a nuisance.”

“So take care of it.”

“I’m not your brother.”

He scoffs. “I’m not suggesting murder. I’m just saying… maybe he needs to get the fucking message. That you’re in her life and he’s out of it.”

That could work… if I had time to go to California and hunt him down.

“You forget.” I point my fork at him. “My team didn’t just lose. I’ve got three hockey games next week alone.”

“So make him come to you.” Knox grins. “Hang some bait out for him.”

A flash of color catches my eye. Melody and another dark-haired girl are exiting the building. She’s wearing the same red dress as last night, although when I found her in the guest bedroom, she had stripped and kept only her sleep shirt and underwear on.

“Gotta go.” I drain my coffee and leave Knox at the table.

“Hey!” Knox yells after me. “Did you pay?”

“Loser pays,” I call back over my shoulder, barely hiding my smirk.
