“You don’t have to apologize.” He gives me a look and slowly drops his hands. “What’s up?”

“You liked the old me.” I eye him. I will not saylove, even though he oh-so delicately announced it to me. “But if I remember and I’m still the new me… what then?”

“I love both,” he says firmly.

“This is so cute, I might barf,” Knox comments.

Jacob flips him off.

His best friend slides out of the booth, patting the table. “See ya on the flip side, Jakey.”

I look over and sigh.

He’s left the damn book.

“Are you going to read it?”

I shrug. “I’ve got to start somewhere, right? I loved reading. And… I kind of want to reread my old favorites, just to see if they’re the same as how I remember them now.”

Even as I say it, I know they’ll be the same. Maybe shifted a little by my different experiences. But they’re just…there.

“Songbird.”

I drag my attention back to Jacob.

“Do you remember the night you… left?”

I think back. To the snowstorm, the hot chocolate. Being so pleased that he thought of it, with whipped cream and sprinkles and everything. There’s not much more after that. A haze of him kneeling between my legs behind my desk and discussing… something.

“It’s fuzzy,” I confess. “I—”

“You’ll get it.” He squeezes my hands. “This is encouraging.”

Yeah. Except then how do I explain the sudden sick feeling in the pit of my stomach?

Whatever’s coming—it isn’t good.

JACOB

She’s remembering.

It’s weird, though. The more she tells me, the more upset I feel. Off my game, in a way.

For so long, things have been status quo. Melody coming back with no memories didn’t even change things for me. I brought her to games, I had my way with her sexually and mentally.

But now she’s remembering.

I have a feeling she’s going to call me on more of my bullshit. She was already doing that a little—like the dinner with my family. She went along with my plan, let me fuck up her makeup and hair by choking her on my dick, but then she left.

Which is more of a turn-on than not.

Hmm…

Have I been taming her too much?

“You’re staring,” she says softly across the table.
