MELODY

“The suites!” Knox crows, shoving open the stairwell door. “You were up in the New York ones, right? Well, my friend told me the LA arena suites are a hundred times posher.”

“Posh?”

“You know. Fancy.”

I shake my head. The only reason I’m somewhat okay with going with Knox is because he said he could talk us into one of the suites and get us free wine. That, and the players keep fighting. Peacocking, Knox called it. He also called them some other choice names, so I figured a walk was in both of our best interests.

“Hey, Mel.”

I turn.

A familiar man comes up the stairwell, stopping on the landing just below Knox and me.

“Thomas? What are you doing here?”

Knox’s gaze bounces from me to him. “Um…”

“Thomas is my middle name, darling.”

He smiles while my blood goes cold.Darling. His voice. His words. It all comes together in a cyclone in my mind, scattering everything else.

“I kept waiting for you to put it together,” he continues. “Kept waiting for you to wake up and say, ‘Oh, you’re not my cousin. You’re myhusband.’”

“Ex-husband,” I automatically correct.

“That’s fucked up,” Knox breathes.

Thomas—no, shoot, Henry—scowls. “Fucked up? You think whatIdid was fucked up?”

“Did you try to kill me?” My voice comes out squeaky.

Knox subtly steps in front of me.

“I don’t want you dead.” Henry’s gaze hardens. “I just want you back with me.”

“You—” I press my fingers into the bridge of my nose. My glasses rise, but I close my eyes anyway. “Did you know I was in the hospital?”

“I didn’t until I got a phone call telling me so. I came when they explained the memory loss. And it was with great joy that I watched your lack of reaction. I thought, what awonderfulway to torment my wife.” He pulls out a gun and aims it at Knox. “Step away from her.”

“Fuck off.”

“I’d be happy to shoot you in the face.”

Knox glances back at me, then faces my ex-husband. Who keeps calling himself my husband.

Because he’s delusional.

“What about Natalie?” I blurt out. “You’re married to her.”

“Natalie is my legal wife,” he allows. “That much is true. She thinks I go by Thomas, as well. Funny, that. Once I started building that separate identity, I met her and things just… went so nicely. She was scarred by the world, a bit like you.”

No. That’s not right.

“I wasn’t scarred by the world,” I hiss. “I was scarred byyou.”

He laughs and comes forward. Knox flinches when Henry-slash-Thomas jerks the gun, but it doesn’t go off. And Knox doesn’t move. He reaches back and squeezes my wrist, easing me up another step. He follows.
