Page 15 of Twisted Obsession

“I don’t know.” I sink into the seat. It’s a lot more comfortable than any I’ve been in before. “I have lists that I’m working through, doctors in New York to check in with. But it’s been a lot of nothing.”

“What’s on the list?”

“Everything.”

He nods slowly. “Where am I going, by the way?” He taps the screen and brings up a GPS system. “Can you type it in here?”

I have to look at Thomas’s contact details on my phone to get the house number right. But once that’s done, the address pops up and the time to destination appears in the bottom corner of the screen. It’s double the time it took me to get here.

“Post-game traffic,” Jacob explains. “It’s always congested downtown with everyone trying to leave.”

Sure enough, we round a corner and stop behind a long line of cars.

“So, the list?” he prompts.

I twist to face him. In the glow of brake lights, his face is illuminated in shades of red. His dark hair is damp and pushed off his face. Or maybe it’s sweat. He’s got a scrape on his cheekbone from one of the fights.

“Did you get into more fights tonight because of me?”

He shakes his head. “Nah. The Guardians were shit-talking more than usual.”

“You lost,” I point out.

“We need to win two more games to move on. But so do they.”

“Hockey isn’t my sport,” I mumble.

He smirks at me. “So you said. So, the list. What’s on it?”

I shake my head and fish out my phone. “First was coffee. Figuring out if I liked it, or how.” I scan my notes on the topic. What felt like a million combinations until I settled on one that felt right.

“How do you take it?”

“I like the mocha drinks if I’m out, but otherwise, cream and two sugars.”

He nods along. “Have you tried hot chocolate?”

Something weird goes through me. Like a phantom finger drawing a line down my spine. Goosebumps spring up on the backs of my arms.

“What was that?”

I shake it off. “What?”

He frowns and doesn’t reply.

“I haven’t had hot chocolate.” I rub my arm with my free hand. “Um, after coffee it was food. Obviously that list is a bit exhaustive. There are too many choices. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, dessert. What if I was a vegetarian? Or vegan? What if I exclusively ate something weird, like tofu and peanut butter?”

Jacob snorts. “I’d like to see you try that.”

I set my phone on my thigh and cross my arms. “I already did.”

“And?”

I crack a smile. “It was disgusting.”

I don’t know what made me think I might like it. It just popped into my head, and I wondered if it was a memory. So, with an obsessiveness that was definitely unhealthy, I made Natalie drive me to the store to get my items. Preparing it was a nightmare in and of itself, and then slathering the peanut butter on it… Well, let’s just say I knew it was a mistake before I even took a bite.

Vile.
