Same as Jacob, you idiot.

They’re out of college. I’m not their professor.

“My ex-husband is in my hotel room.”

They stop. Aspen’s mouth drops open, and Violet just shakes her head slowly.

“How do you know?” Aspen asks.

I pull up the photo and hand them my phone.

“He didn’t say anything else?”

“No.” I take it back and shut it down. I’d rather not look at it any more than I must. “No demands, no threats. Just the picture, which I guess in and of itself is a threat.”

“Maybe he couldn’t get into the arena,” Aspen suggests. “The police know what he looks like, maybe he spotted extra security and freaked out.”

“Breaking into your hotel room would be the next best thing,” Violet agrees. “He’s messing with you.”

It’s obvious that he’s messing with me. It’s obvious that he wants to torment me as long as he can.

What’s not obvious is how to stop him.

“I got away from him not once, buttwice. That’s got to count for something. That’s got to piss him off—”

“He found you twice, though, didn’t he?” Aspen frowns. “Or was it three times?”

I touch the scar on my neck again. It’s the one I often go back to. “No… I don’t think he tried to kill me. Not like that. He’s smart.”

“Then who did?”

That’s just it. “I have no idea.”

We all go quiet.

“Vi?” Greyson’s voice drifts into the restroom.

“We’re okay,” she calls back. To me, she says, “You should tell the police.”

I agree.

We stay up in the hallway until an officer meets us at our location. I show him the picture, explain that he’s texting me even with a restraining order—honestly, all of it. He has officers dispatched to the hotel.

Knox and Steele join us in the hall before the end of the game. Knox steps up next to me and shows me a video of Jacob scoring.

“He was looking for you,” Knox says.

I shrug. “There’s not much I can do about that.”

I show him the pictureIgot, and his face pales.

“Well, shit.”

“My sentiments exactly,” I reply.

I text Jacob, although I don’t expect him to see it until he’s back in the locker room. Something along the lines of, we’re safe, it’s fine. Knox relays the same thing to Miles and Willow, who are still at our seats.

“Ma’am?” The officer returns, his expression decidedly blank. “We checked your room, as well as the rest of the hotel. There was no sign of your ex-husband.”
