He traces a spot on my upper arm, on the inside. Like where a birth control implant would go. “Here.”

“Okay.”

We sit, and he carefully preps the area. I can’t deny the shiver of anticipation that rushes through me. I’m expecting pain, sure, but also… I don’t know. It’s a weird form of security, isn’t it?

“Wait.” I grab his wrist and stop him from picking up the tool.

“What is it?”

“I just…” I have a sense of déjà vu. “You haven’t done this before? To me?”

“No.”

I stare at the tool, and I can imagine—no, Iknow—there’s a pinch as it slides under the skin. But it doesn’t hurt, not really.

Not comparatively.

How do I know that?

“Melody?”

“I…” I touch the back of my neck.

He immediately moves behind me, shifting my hair over one shoulder. His fingers on my skin raise goosebumps, but I hold still as he probes.

“There’s a little scar here.”

A lump forms in my throat. “He put it there.”

Jacob is silent.

“Henry put a tracker in me, Jake.” I whirl around and grab the front of his shirt.

ThankGodthe others aren’t in the room to witness my hysterics. Even though I have an excellent reason for them.

“You need to get it out.”

He captures my wrists. “I will. But you need to breathe.”

“He could’ve found me in New York—”

“It looks like a more recent scar,” he says gently. “Like from the last few months.”

Like…

I’m going to be sick. I jerk away from Jacob and practically sprint to the bathroom, dropping to my knees in front of the toilet. He follows me, collecting my hair as I throw up. It’s pathetic and of weak constitution, but I can’t help the turmoil churning me up on the inside.

When my stomach stops heaving, I rock back on my heels and wipe my mouth with the back of my hand. He pours me a cup of water and holds it to my lips, letting me sip it.

“You’re okay,” he murmurs.

“He could already be in Crown Point.”

“Good. No one messes with us here.”

I shudder and lean into him.

I’m pretty sure I’m in love with Jacob Rhodes. But the words stick, and after a minute he picks us up off the floor. He sits me down at the table, ordering me to stay, and disappears to find everyone else.
