“Just in time,” Kristy says, breaking away from the equipment manager and smiling at me. “We’re pretty much done, so we can just watch the rest of the game from here.”

The players are already on the ice, although the game hasn’t started. They seem to be doing another quick lap.

Someone skids to a halt in the opening, showering ice shavings against the lip of the boards. “Having fun?”

I smile at Jacob. “It’s interesting.”

“I’ll take that, I guess.”

“Rhodes!” his coach hollers from the bench.

Jacob winks at me and skates off. Someone closes the door, sealing it off from the rink, and only a moment later, the third period starts.

Kristy and I watch the game from the glass, tucked just out of the way. There are fans right over us, and sometimes I feel their gaze. But none is as heavy as Lucy’s.

Lucy Page.

I found a friend.

I pull out my list and make a note that my hair is naturally light brown. Thomas didn’t say anything about it. But now that I think about it, my hair has been looking dull at the roots. Now I know, it’s not dullness, it’s just a different color.

I smile.

Sometimes, it’s the little things. And sometimes, it’s a whole lot more.

JACOB

“Hey.” I run my knuckles down Melody’s arm.

She lifts her head, blinking groggily at me. “Did I fall asleep?”

I suppress my smile. “Just a little. Do you want me to carry you upstairs?”

We’re in the parking garage under my high-rise building. She was drowsy when the plane touched down and snoring by the time we hit the highway. Her bag is in the back, and I make quick work slinging it and mine over my shoulder.

She’s already got her door open, rubbing her eyes carefully under her glasses. I don’t give her the chance to put her feet on the ground, instead scooping her straight out of the truck and into my arms.

Melody pitches into me, yelping and throwing her arms around my neck. It puts our faces close, just the way I like it. Although by the way she immediately cranes back, I’m thinking it’s not reciprocated.Yet.

“This is not very friend-like,” she breathes.

“On the contrary.” I kick the door shut and head for the elevator. “This is the epitome of friendly. Can you hit the up button? Fob is in my breast pocket.”

“You want me to feel you up?”

I lift her higher, trying not to smirk. My cock is doing his thing again, making himself known. Last thing I need is for her to feel it and getreallyfreaked out. Carrying her is one thing. Letting her know I’m lusting over her curves before she’s ready is another.

“If I wanted you to feel me up, I’d be less subtle,” I promise.

She hits the button to call the elevator, shifting slightly to get to where I stashed my condo key and fob. Her fingers slip against my chest, and goosebumps rise on the backs of my arms.

Seriously, what other woman could do that to me? With the slightest touch?

We step in.

“Eighteenth floor,” I tell her, dipping her so she can reach.
