I’m meeting Lucy Page before the game. Gamesix.

She and I texted a bit yesterday, enough for her to convince her husband to fly to Denver and come to the playoff game. They’re Guardians fans, and there’s a chance their team could win and move on to the next round.

Which would end Jacob’s season.

Jacob

I’m sending a driver.

I roll my eyes.

Lucy is picking me up. It’s fine.

Jacob

Text me when you get here.

He’s been at the arena since eleven o’clock this morning. Doing what, I don’t have any fucking idea. Or interest. But I swore I’d wear the jersey, and that’s what I can’t go back on. And that kind of locked me into going to the game, too.

Besides, I want answers that Lucy can give me.

I finally checked my social media. Of my meager posts, Lucy was in three of them. Jacob was in none—unsurprising, actually. I searched forhissocial media page and found it even more impersonal than mine. Shots of him on the ice both recently and in college, signing the Titans contract, posing on a lake with some friends. Barely any captions. But he sure is tagged in a lot. Seems like, for all the warmth he shows me, he’s not friendly toward his fans.

Lucy

We’re out front!

Be right down.

I found a tube of red lipstick along with the other makeup I brought from Thomas’s house. It seemed unused, so I caved. It sits in my purse, waiting for me to put it on. Another thing I’m oddly afraid to do. I shove my glasses higher up my nose and flip my hair back.

The checklist of things I need runs through my head as I stride for the door. Phone. Key to the condo and the fob that’ll get me in the elevator. Purse. The ticket from Jacob is on my phone.

In the elevator, it dawns on me that I haven’t actually left Jacob’s building. We went down to the gym yesterday, and he showed me the pool on the tenth floor. The building is terraced, so the pool is at the top of the widest level. It’s enclosed in the winter and open in the summer.

I don’t know if I like swimming. Or if I know how to swim. Jacob made a comment offhandedly about pushing me in to find out, but I think the panic in my eyes stopped him. So… that’s a mystery for another day.

Lucy is standing on the curb beside a large, black SUV. She’s got a Guardians jersey on, one that fits her form instead of like a shroud. She waves and bounces forward, dragging me into a hug.

“Sorry,” she exclaims, releasing me quickly. “Getting used to the memory loss thing.”

“You and me both.” I try to laugh. It’s a little strained, but… whatever.

The back door of the SUV opens, and a tall man gets out. He’s gorgeous. Tall, dark hair, clean-cut. He drops his hand on Lucy’s shoulder, and I automatically flinch.

“This is my husband, Theo,” Lucy introduces. “He went to the rival high school, and we ended up at college together.”

They trade a look I can’t decipher.

“Nice to meet you, Melody.”

I shake his hand. Because… well, I guess that feels better than hugging? I don’t want to hug him. He’s kind of scary, in a rich, pretty-boy way.

“Same,” I manage.

“Ready?” Lucy asks.

“Lux,” Theo warns.
