What can I say?

I was always a bad student.

“Rhodes.” Camden Church, team captain and right wing, drops onto the bench beside me. His helmet is off, his hair damp. “You look distracted.”

I roll my eyes. “I’m fine.”

“Now’s not the time to lose focus.”

“Fuck off, Church.”

He grins and stands again. “Whatever you say, pretty boy.”

I shake my head.

Melody

You still there?

Always.

We’re right next to your penalty box. We saw Dawes thrown in there earlier (Theo told me his name, and that he’s a starter like you)…

Is there a question in there?

Do you ever get put in the penalty box?

Only when I’m naughty

You fight?

I got ejected from a game once. For fighting.

Because I was so fucking pissed at the world, and ather, that I could barely see straight. The guy said one wrong thing, and I snapped. But it worked out fine, because it led me to the art auction on the suite level, where I found the bird painting by Melody.

I wonder if she knows she’s an artist. If her friend mentioned her paintings.

Would she still have the talent without the memory?

If I forgot everything, would I be able to play hockey?

What a foolish thought.

I’m stuck with the desire to get Melody an easel. Paints. Whatever her heart desires. I want to sit her in front of it and set her loose on the canvas, just to see what happens.

Maybe she can fly. Without memory of it… maybe she can forget the tar stuck to her wings and taste the wind.

Jacob

I got ejected from a game once. For fighting.

Flashes of his bloody knuckles, his face, cross my mind.

I guess I was in an abusive relationship. Before.
