She’s regurgitating information I already know, but I can’t exactly tellherthat.

“Let me know if you can make it,” she says softly. “We miss you. And you have summers off—”

Offis a fancy term forwork harder.

“I’ll let you know, okay?”

She sighs. “That’s fine, honey. Let me know what time dinner is tomorrow, okay?”

“You got it.”

“Love you! Thanks for calling. We’ll chat soon.”

We hang up, and I close my eyes again. I love my parents, but sometimes they’re exhausting. And I wish people would let them live anonymously. But with every game, it seems like awareness of me has grown. I sometimes just watch my social media following tick higher and higher, wondering what the fuck my life is. I never post anyway. It doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t stop people from following me.

“You okay?”

I jerk.

It’s been a while since anyone has snuck up on me, but Melody has succeeded. She stands almost behind the doorframe, half hidden by it. Just peeking into the room. Her hair is down, messy from sleep and a bit wild.

“What are we doing today?” I ask her.

She lifts one shoulder and drifts farther into the office. “We?”

“We fly tomorrow. My friends are in town, we can get lunch with them.”

Better to introduce Melody to Devereux before I shove her on a plane with them.

She wraps her arms around her stomach. “You fly tomorrow,” she corrects. “I don’t know. Your friends? Have I met them before?”

“Actually, no.”

Her relief is evident from here. “Okay. Maybe. I want to keep job searching, and…” She bites her lower lip.

I want to tell her that every time she bites it, it makes my dick twitch. I drop my feet off the corner of the desk and use it to hide my growing erection like a teenager.

“And?”

“I can’t keep using your girlfriend’s clothes,” she blurts out. “And all that makeup—”

“Wait.” Fuck hiding my hard-on. I jump to my feet and stride around the desk. “Girlfriend?”

Her gaze drops to my groin, her lips parting.

“Eyes up here,” I demand.

She gives me that, and I reach for her. Her sharp exhale when my palm brushes her throat tells me she doesn’t want soft. She doesn’t want coddling.

She thinks I have a girlfriend?

I’ll prove her wrong.

I push her by her throat against the wall, and her pupils fucking dilate.

“You’re the only one who gets me hard,” I say in a low voice. I grind my erection into her belly. “Feel that, songbird?”

Her gaze slants away. “Doesn’t mean you didn’t have someone before I crashed back into orbit.”
