MELODY

One minute some gorgeous young woman is sucking Jacob’s flaccid cock. And the next, he’s fuckingmewith his very large, very hard…

“That wasn’t okay.”

My voice isn’t shaking, but my hands are. I ball them into fists and muster my best glare. I just ran a marathon in terms of sex—I mean, IthinkI did. I don’t have much to go on except the jelly feeling in my limbs. And the way he brought not one but two orgasms crashing down on me.

“Seriously,” I add, seeing his smile. “You—”

“I showed you what it means to be my only.” He touches my chin. “I don’t give a shit if the room was filled with naked women. I only want you. I only react to you. I’m only obsessed withyou.”

My eyes fill with tears.

“You made me suck—I had to tastehersaliva on your dick.”

His expression goes blank. And just when I think he’s going to change the subject or… I don’t know. Ignore it? He steps closer and rights my bra. The cups make a noise as they flip back into place, and he slowly tugs my shirt closed. The buttons are missing, but maybe he thinks it’s the thought that counts?

“That wasn’t my intention.” He runs his thumb across my lower lip. “But it is a just punishment for doubting me.”

My mouth drops open.

“And besides,” he adds. “Something about that turned you on.”

Oh.Yeah.

But I’m definitely not telling him. Instead, I inch around him and out of the office. My feelings don’t have a space here. My heart doesn’t either. Everything about this morning, and last night, has left me confused.

And maybe a little bit broken.

Once I’m locked in the bathroom with my phone, I thumb through my few contacts. There are more messages from Thomas and Natalie, a few from Lucy. One from an unknown number.

I click on it.

It’s a voice message. One of the ones that can be sent by text. I hold my thumb over the play button, hesitating.

Get over your fear, Melody.

I play it. When no one speaks, I turn up the volume. All the way up, until there’s an underlying hint of static—and breathing.

The hair on the back of my neck stands up.

The message is a minute long. I’ve gone through forty-five seconds of it.

So when the voice does come through, I nearly jump out of my skin.

“I’m coming for you, darling.”

I drop the phone and run out of the bathroom. My earlier plight with Jacob forgotten, I all but dive into his arms.

“Whoa.” He barely rocks when I crash into him, banding his arms around my back. “What happened?”

“I—” Tears flood my eyes. “I got a message—”

“Okay.” He pries me back a little, searching my face. “Okay, what did it say?”

I shudder. My stomach flips, and I know that I’m about to lose it. Hysteria bubbles up my throat, and my face crumples. I can’t do anything to stop the sobs from bursting out of me.

“It’s okay,” he murmurs, dragging me back into his chest. “Where’s your phone?”
