“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I shrug. “You’ve got to experience it. But Icanmake sure you don’t go hungry. I tap her phone, face down on the table beside her knife. “Put it on your list.”

She huffs. It’s kind of cute. It’s why I keep watching her type, until she stops and stares at the screen. It slips out of her hand and hits the edge of the table with acrack, falling to her lap.

I snag it before it hits the floor.

There’s another text from the blocked number.

Another texted voice message. I wave at my friends to stop talking, and they focus in on me. I hitplay.

Melody makes a noise of protest. “Don’t—”

“Hey, darling. How’s New York treating you? Tell your pops I say hello.”It goes quiet, but there’s still thirty seconds left. After ten, the jackass I can only assume is her ex-husband continues,“I’ve been thinking a lot about our reunion. I found you last time. It’s only a matter of time before I find you again.”

I hit the ‘keep’ button before it can disappear, and I drop the phone facedown. I’m tempted to play it again and again, just to cement it in my memory, but I fear it’s already there.

“He knows I’m in New York?” Melody whispers through her fingers. “How can he know? How does he know my father?”

“This is getting ridiculous,” I snap. At no one in particular, but my girl flinches all the same.

Fuck.

I jerk back from the table, taking her phone with me. I dial Bill’s number and step out onto the sidewalk, heading toward the corner of the building. There’s a line to get into this place, and I’m drawing a few looks. I’m half a block away by the time he answers.

“Did you get the file I sent you?” I ask.

Vicky managed to get me the details of the restraining order. Since legal jargon is far outside of my expertise, I sent them by private courier to Bill. And even though he lives in Denver, they arrived at his doorstep early this morning.

“I was just finishing going through them.”

“He’s threatening her,” I seethe. “He’s fucking sending her messages. That’s got to be against the terms, doesn’t it?”

“It would be,” he agrees. “He’s not allowed to contact her…”

“But?”

He grunts. “But, guess who has kept the lowest profile for the past two and a half years?”

“You think—” I laugh. “How the fuck did he keep her hidden for… for two years?”

He’s silent.

He’s fuckingserious.

“Bill.” My voice has changed. The humor gone. I feel it all drain out of me, down my legs and out my shoes. “He didn’t find her in Crown Point, did he? Is that what this is referring to?”

“I’m looking into it.”

“Text me Armstrong’s address.”

Bill hesitates. “Tell me you aren’t planning on doing anything stupid.”

“I’m not going to do anything stupid,” I parrot.

I’m going to do something insane.

Butstupid?
