I blink to clear my distorted vision. “How was that?”

“Better than ever,” she mumbles.

“We take customer satisfaction very seriously at Evans Auto Body.”

“I believe you,” she exhales to the rafters.

“Just one more question, Pitch.”

Harper’s head lolls on the lift. “Mhmm?”

“Would you like a complimentary donut to go with your orgasmic bliss?”

Susan lingers in the entryway while assessing Polly’s hair. “That style is quite… unique.”

“Sydney’s daddy did it all by himself. He didn’t ask for help.” The little girl dips her head to proudly show off Jake’s efforts.

The woman shifts her gaze to the guy responsible for her daughter’s quad ponytail mess. “You got creative with the design.”

He smirks at the slanted compliment. “Do what I can.”

She offers a gentle smile in return. “Thanks again for letting Polly spend the night.”

I brush off her seventh scoop of gratitude. “Don’t mention it. Syd has stayed at your place every other weekend for years, right?”

“Something like that,” she agrees with a laugh.

“Jake was long overdue to take a turn. I was available to run interference. We were more than happy to finally return the favor.”

Susan’s grin spreads. “And I’m very glad you two are dating again.”

“A bit more serious than that,” Jake rumbles while edging closer to me.

“Ah, I see.” The town gossip gets a twinkle in her eye. Maybe that was the purpose of my boyfriend’s clarification. “Either way, our suspicions are confirmed.”

Bingo.

“I had the superest-duperest time!” Syd exclaims and wraps her friend in a hug. “Will you come over again really soon?”

“Uh-huh. Like tomorrow?” Polly pulls from the embrace to clasp her palms in a pleading gesture.

“Yay! My daddy always says that’s right around the corner. It’s not far away!” Sydney squeals. The girls join hands and begin spinning in a premature celebration.

“We’ll talk about it,” Susan deflects.“For now, it’s time to go.”

After a final round of waves, she steers her daughter outside to end our long-winded Minnesota goodbye.

“Can I go play with Glitzy?” Syd’s blink is slow. She looks ready for a nap and it’s only nine o’clock.

“Go right ahead. Looks like a fun activity you can do together.” Jake nods at the pampered pooch snoozing on the couch.

“Welp.” I brush off my palms. “Our first official kiddo sleepover was a success.”

He loops an arm around my shoulder, pulling me in until his lips land on my forehead. “Thanks to you.”

“Pssssh.” I swat his chest. “Don’t give me too much credit. Your tea party and wacky salon were the true scene stealers.”

“We make an excellent team,” he says in response.
