“That’s about right.” But she volunteered in this case. I won’t let her efforts go to waste.

Harper’s concentration is still diverted, so she doesn’t notice me creeping over. I slide a palm into the back pocket of her jeans, using the grip to tug her flush against me. Her body collides with mine as she sputters an exhale. Startled eyes leap upward to find my smirk waiting.

“Hey, Pitch.” Heat is quick to spread through me while her curves are in my possession.

She recovers from the momentary shock and straightens in my hold. “What’re you doing?”

I test the limits, letting my fingers dig into her denim-clad ass. “Getting comfortable. This is the first time I’ve been to your place.”

Harper squints and quirks a knowing brow. “Which is funny since I don’t recall inviting you.”

“Want me to leave?”

Her glare shifts off mine, lowering to my throat. “I’m not rude.”

“Then offer me a drink and see what happens.”

“That’s an unnecessary risk,” she murmurs.

“What’s the alternative? Sydney won’t leave unless you kick us out.”

She studies me, countless questions swirling in her gaze. “Were the KitKats your idea?”

I shrug. “Syd wanted to see you. She’s been asking nonstop when you’re coming over again for dinner. I’d prefer dessert, but that’s a different discussion.”

Harper blushes. “You’re incorrigible.”

“For you? Yes.” My bent knuckle traces the heat blooming on her cheeks. “I might’ve let it slip that you’re a sucker for certain treats.”

“Where’d you find a whole bouquet of them?”

“Made it myself.”

“You?” She scoffs a dry laugh, but her amusement sobers at my serious expression. “Oh, wow. That’s… uncharacteristic.”

I tug my bottom lip between my teeth. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to resist kissing her. “Might surprise you yet, Pitchy.”

Her gulp is audible. “I’m scared about interfering. Syd is getting really attached to me, which is fine. But pretending to be her mom? That’s a lot.”

“Too much?”

She gapes at me. “Why aren’t you more concerned about this?”

“Should I be?" Little does she know it’s an outcome I fantasize about constantly. “What I’m worried about is where this leads, the ideas it sprouts, and the impact on Syd if you’re not committed.”

“Right, of course. Again, it’s never been my intention to overstep.”

“That’s not what you’re doing. Sydney wants a reliable female figure in her life. You don’t have to be her fake mom to give her that.”

“Okay, I don’t want her actual mother to be offended.”

The possibility is comical. “You’re no threat to Morgan.”

“No?”

“Have you seen her lately? She hasn’t visited since before Christmas.”

Harper winces. “Maybe she’s busy?”
