I spy several available seats, hitching my thumb in that direction. “Hungry?”

She grimaces. “Eh, I probably shouldn’t eat greasy stuff. My stomach hasn’t fully recovered.”

“Good call,” I mumble. My attention drifts in an erratic arc across the vast space.

After several stilted beats, Grace must realize I’m floundering. “What was your favorite thing to do here as a kid?”

Fond memories stream in, centering on a particular activity. “Have you ever been in a hay maze?”

Ipluck some hay from the bale beside me. “Not corn stalks, huh?”

“That’s reserved for fall,” Garrett explains.

“This is larger than I pictured.”

A dimple winks at me from his cheek. “That’s what a man likes to hear.”

“You’re incorrigible,” I chide. Too bad there’s no malice in my tone. If anything, the giggle that I can’t muffle only encourages him.

“Well, duh. It’s one of my most flattering character traits.” He motions down his body.

“At least you can admit it. Anywho,” I verbally pivot before he can send my thoughts spiraling to breathy moans trapped between tangled sheets. “Tell me about the significance behind this maze.”

Garrett turns to admire the stacks with a reverence I recognize. “It was a ritual of sorts growing up. This was our first stop and we turned it into a race. Whoever won got to decide what we did next.”

“And did you win?”

“Of course,” he scoffs. “The rules changed in high school when I’d challenge a pretty girl to beat me.”

My eyebrow quirks at his vague description that receives no further explanation. “How so?”

His bottom lip gets tugged between his teeth. “If I caught her before the exit, she had to give me a kiss.”

“Why am I not surprised?” Thanks to the fading sunlight, I ditched my shades and can expose my utter lack of shock with an eye roll.

“You shouldn’t be.”

“How many lucky ladies did you kiss in there?”

“Not important. There’s only one target I’m interested in hitting now. What do you say, Peaches?” He steps forward, putting us within touching distance. “Want to give it a go?”

There’s already a thrum rushing beneath my skin. “What’re the stakes?”

“I’d very much like to kiss you.” Garrett’s focus dips to my mouth.

“And if I win?” My voice rattles with an uneven exhale.

“That’s your choice to wishfully think about.”

My gasp is paired with a swat to his chest. “Don’t let my plus-size figure fool you. I’m very fast.”

He rubs a palm over his hair, properly chastised. “Wouldn’t assume you’re capable of anything less than bringing me to my knees.”

“Is that a surrender?”

“Nah, that’s just me recognizing a worthy opponent. But I’ll kneel right now if you’re offering me something to eat.” He smacks his lips.

A flush races up my neck, no doubt painting my skin a rosy hue. “I’ll save that as my prize.”
