Garrett stares at me for a solid minute without speaking. There are too many unknown possibilities swirling in those blue depths. I squirm under such blatant scrutiny. If this reaction is any indication, it’s going to be impossible to pretend that sex didn’t ruin our friendship. His gaze drops to my lips, releasing me from the captivating hold.

“What do you think about amending our pact?” He grabs my hand that’s still resting on his chest.

“Do we actually have one? I thought you agreed to find Mr. Monogamy for me out of the goodness of your heart.”

His thumb rubs over my knuckles. “Are you really talking about another man while in bed with me?”

Sharp laughter is my initial response. “Let’s be honest, he’s a figment of my imagination.”

“You’ll find him.” His voice carries a flat detachment I could learn from.

“Um, okay. Tell me about this amendment.”

He toys with my fingers that are interlocked between his. “If you’re not married by thirty-five, I’ll do the honors.”

“Oh, please. Don’t do me any favors.” My dry tone is brittle at the edges.

“You’d be doing me one.” That soul-aching yearning is back in his gaze.

I avert my eyes, landing on our reflection above. That’s an instant mistake. The sight of us tangled together steals my breath. It’s too intimate. We’re not a couple. Repeating the truth doesn’t erase the lie we’re putting on display. I don’t want to believe this was a mistake, but the ache splitting me in half suggests otherwise.

The knot in my throat doubles in size. “I guess we’ll see what Cupid has planned.”

“Should we make this a regular thing in the meantime?” Garrett squeezes my ass to accentuate the point.

There’s a pit growing in my belly. “A no-strings-fling?”

He flinches. “Would it be more acceptable if I don’t sleep with anyone else while we’re hooking up?”

I recoil. My entire face stings, as if slapped with heat. “Seriously?”

“Nah, I’m shitty for even voicing that as an option.”

“Maybe it’s best if we just pretend nothing happened.” I slam down my guard with a painful disconnect. My body breaks from his embrace with an innocent stretch that blesses me with personal space.

“I can assure you that’s not going to happen.” He taps his temple. “Constant replay.”

“Fine, I’ll block it out for both of us.”

Garrett tucks a bent arm under his head. The position puts his bicep on bulging display. “I should warn you that I’m impossible to forget.”

“Not to mention extremely full of yourself,” I mutter.

His head rolls on the pillow to catch my gaze. “You were full of me all night.”

I whip the blanket over my head and groan. “Don’t need to remind me.”

He tugs the sheet down until I’m forced to face him. His handsome features glow in the early sunlight streaking through the window. “Hey, why are you hiding?”

“No reason.”

But the urge to duck and cover makes me twitchy. If pressed, I’ll admit this internal struggle was my prediction. The way I felt about Garrett before we slept together was already muddled. Now I’m screwed, and not in the way I wanted to be.

He reads my grimace like the clue it is. “Are things going to be weird between us?”

“Nope. We’ll figure it out,” I vow. Fake it or break it. “I’m still looking for love and you, most certainly, are not.”

“That’s right.” His clipped response doesn’t believe me.
