A reflection from the television hanging nearby plays across his features. “Eh, you’re worth the trip to Timbuktu. I wouldn’t be upset if you moved closer to Knox Creek, though.”

“And why would I do that?”

“So we can slot more activities into our regularly scheduled traditions.”

“I’ll consider it.” But my tone flatlines at the notion.

Garrett’s smile drops. “Why are you avoiding me?”

“I’m not,” I hedge.

His finger wags to scold me. “Be honest.”

I toss my hands in the air, almost smacking him in the agitated process. “You were right. Sex complicates things. It’s a total joke to assume otherwise. Although to be fair, I knew this would happen. On almost every level. You did too. Obviously. We can’t sleep together and pretend nothing has changed. Things are going to be weird between us now. I needed space to figure out how to handle our friendship.”

He calmly watches me rant. “And you came to someone else’s bar to get hit on by men who don’t deserve you?”

“It would be awkward meeting guys at Roosters,” I deflect.

His stare is too intense. “Why is that?”

I avert my gaze to a stain on the counter. “You’re going to make me say it?”

“Absolutely.”

My throat is suddenly very parched. I sip at my drink to soothe the burn. It takes several gulps to gain the liquid courage to look at him again. “I might’ve developed romantic feelings for you that seem to be even stronger since we had sex.”

There’s a fire in his eyes that smolders into blue flames. “You’re telling me this while suckling on a cocktail that another bartender made for you?”

“That’s what you’re choosing to focus on?”

“Hard not to.” Garrett whips something from his pocket, holding up the pink object for me to see.

“You brought me a straw?” On closer inspection, the plastic is molded in an unmistakable shape. “It’s a penis.”

“For your sucking pleasure. Wrap your lips around this little guy. Pretend it’s a smaller version of mine.”

“Umm.” I find myself stumbling for words again, but for a completely different reason.

“Your mouth belongs on the peen I provide.” He rips the standard straw from my glass and tosses it in the trash. Then the tiny dick slides in as an apparent upgrade. “Try that pecker hole on for size.”

I quirk a brow at his antics. “How very territorial of you.”

“Call me a caveman if you’d like, just so long as I’m yours.”

“Now you’re being charming. My panties are in trouble.” I fan myself and add an eye roll for extra impact.

“Funny you should mention that.” Garrett digs his phone from his pocket, quickly tapping at the screen.

Mine buzzes from its place on the bar. I swing my gaze from the vibrating device to him. “What’re you doing?”

His smirk is crooked. “See who it’s from.”

I flip my cell over to see the notification. Nobody is shocked that the message is from Garrett. What has my pulse spiking is the picture that’s attached. I blink at the image of him for several seconds. “Why did you send this to me?”

“As a potential candidate. I can vouch that he’s the real deal.”

“Are you making fun of my system?” I poke him in the pec, my finger bouncing off the chiseled muscle. “Which, by the way, you invented.”
