ChapterTwenty-Six

ICTH

Piper doesn’t textme back for a few hours. I’m loading shit into the car and putting the car back to rights, to head down to the suppliers, when my phone goes off in my pocket. Taking it out, I look at the notification. It’s a text.

PIPER: Okay.

Frowning, I stare at the screen. The single word, the period at the end. This screams pissed-off woman. Pressing my lips together, I grunt, then look over at Roadkill, who is putting the door back on. It’s the last part of the car before we can leave.

“I think my wife is pissed off,” I murmur.

“Why?”

I could list a few reasons probably, but none would make her be so cold to me after being so fucking hot earlier.

“I don’t know.”

Roadkill lets out a bark of laughter. “Brother, every man I know says the same shit, and every woman has a laundry list of reasons.”

Nodding, I clear my throat. “Yeah, I just don’t know what it could be right now. Mind if we stop by the salon before we bounce?”

“We can stop by there,” he mutters.

Though, I know it’s partially because he wants to see his woman, too. We climb into the car. Roadkill drives as I stare at the text messages wondering how in the hell I already fucked this up again. I thought we were in a good place, but fuck me, I don’t think we are.

It doesn’t take us long to arrive downtown and park in front of the salon. Climbing out, I walk so quickly that I practically run inside. I don’t see Piper, but who I do see is Tempt sitting in Reese’s chair getting her fucking hair done.

“What the fuck?” I growl.

Reese’s head sharply turns, her eyes finding mine, and they widen. “No drama in my shop,” she snaps. Then she takes a step backward. “You’re done, hon. That’ll be two hundred dollars.”

I almost burst out laughing. There is no way anything that Reese does in this shop costs that much, but she’s going to fuck this bitch over. I smile as I watch it go down. Tempt grunts, then I watch as she takes out two hundred dollars in cash and slaps it down on the little table where the mirror is.

Tempt stands, her eyes narrowing on Reese before she spins around and faces me. “The atmosphere in here doesn’t vibe. I’m probably not going to come back.”

I stare at her, unmoving, unblinking, unbreathing as I wait for her to walk away. She doesn’t, though. Instead, she lifts her hand and places her palm on the center of my chest as she tilts her head backward.

“I’ll see you soon, baby.”

Her voice is barely above a whisper, and it’s a throaty purr. I don’t move. I don’t do a damn thing. I have no fucking clue what she’s talking about. When she grows tired of the silence, she lowers her hand and walks away.

The door to the shop closes, and I turn to Reese to ask her where Piper is, but she begins to speak, and when she does, what she says shocks the fucking shit out of me. Although, it shouldn’t. I’ve seen enough in this life that nothing should ever surprise me.

“I don’t think she’s pregnant,” Reese announces. “If I were you, I’d keep my dick in my pants until you have confirmation.”

My entire body jerks, and my eyes widen. I never thought about that. It didn’t cross my mind that she would lie about that, that she would lie to Duke about it. I open my mouth, then snap it closed. I don’t know how to even respond to that.

“Piper is in the back room, probably crying. That woman is a piece of fucking work,” she snaps.

Without responding, I brush past her and move directly toward the back of the salon. It doesn’t take me long to find her. She’s sitting at a small table, her back to me, her neck bent.

“Piper,” I call out.

Her spine straightens, but she doesn’t turn around to me. Instead, she stays where she is, with her back to me. She’s pissed. “I’m sorry she came in here. I didn’t know,” I say.

“You told her that this is where I was working?” she asks.

I could lie, tell her that it was all coincidence, but I doubt it was. I did tell Tempt that this is where Piper was working, but not so that she could come down here and be a fucking cunt.
