“It only takes one, and you were understandably more occupied with my brother.” She reached out, briefly pressing her hand on my arm. Though her fingers were ghostly, the touch felt real. Warm. “I’m so pleased for you both. You are going to make a very fine alpha, even if you are no wolf.”

I laughed again, the sound disbelieving more than amused. “I wish I shared your confidence.”

“Mom will come around.”

“No, Katie, she won’t.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Care to make a wager? She can hold a grudge, granted, and the past has had too much influence on her actions and decisions, but she will see beyond it and accept what is best for the pack. I’m sure of that, if nothing else.”

“I don’t share that confidence, Katie. More importantly, neither does my precognition.”

She smiled. “Do note that I didn’t mention how long it would take her to accept it.”

“Meaning I could be old and gray before that actually happens.”

“By the time you’re old and gray, she’ll be dead. It’ll happen well before that, I’m sure.”

I snorted, but didn’t bother saying anything else. We’d find out eventually which of us was right. I said goodbye and headed back down the hill, accompanied much of the way down by the luminous threads. I was sweating profusely by the time I reached the SUV, and I was tempted—very tempted—to detour past one of the many swimming holes scattered about the area on my way home and take a dip. But once again, I’d spent way more time up at the wellspring than it had appeared, and it was now close to six. I needed to get home and have a shower before Aiden came over.

I turned the SUV around and headed back down the rutted, pot-holed track, then turned onto the road. Dust plumed behind the SUV, turning the sky behind me a dull shade of brown.

In the middle of that brown, a shape appeared.

A shape that was large and sinewy.

My heart leapt into my throat, and for a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

The basilisk was behind me.

ChapterSeven

I was tempted to hit the accelerator and get the fuck out of the area as fast as I could, but I resisted. Aside from the fact that I’d most likely end up toppling down the steep hillside to my right again, the basilisk didn’t appear to be gaining ground.

That it could even keep pace with the truck was fucking scary.

I flexed my fingers against the steering wheel, sending little sparks of energy flying, and then reached out to Belle.

You busy?

Nope. Why?

It would appear I’ve attracted the attention of the basilisk.

I glanced again at the rearview mirror. It was still there, getting no closer, but not falling away either. I wondered if that was intentional. It was ademonsnake, after all, and demons weren’t affected by the same constraints as the rest of us.

What? Fuck. Her thoughts went offline for a second, no doubt while she told Monty.Where are you?

On the old road that heads toward Katie’s track, about a kilometer away from the Castlemaine—Maldoon Road.

Another pause.Monty wants to know what the hell it is doing up there.

I think the more pertinent question is, how has it gotten here without being seen? You can also tell him I have no intention of stopping to ask either question.

She snorted. Is it threatening you in any way?

Not yet.

Keep moving. We’re on our way. Let me know if the situation changes.
