“While having amazing sex,” I added.

“Of course.”

“Let’s start with a shower and round two,” I proposed. “I seem to remember a little promise about you having me every which way, and it’s been too long since you were inside me.”

“Well, I do always keep my promises.” Yapping broke out, reminding me that Clark had a dog. He looked sheepish. “Right after I check on Mookie. He got a very quick pat on the head before I herded him into the enclosed porch so we wouldn’t be interrupted.”

“Poor guy. I’ll try to be patient while he gets some attention, but hurry back.”

“Oh, I will…”

Though it would take some time before I was truly up for more action, the lower simmer of anticipation ignited in my gut. I couldn’t wait to spend every night with this man, to wake up with him every morning.

To have the happily ever after I’d once thought I’d lost along with Holly.

My divorce had hurt, and for a time, it had made me doubt that love could last. But falling for Clark had helped me see that love alone wasn’t enough. You had to find the right person, and I knew without a doubt that Clark was perfect for me.

Perfect for Toby too, once my stubborn son opened his eyes. Which he would. I had no doubt. Toby was too smart not to realize how special Clark was. Any day now, he’d be ready to admit how much love he had for Clark, and then our lives could really begin again.

I woke to kisses—frommy dog, rather than Hunter. Once again, I was alone in the bed, but this time I had no worry that Hunter had snuck out on me. I pushed Mookie’s face away, wrinkling my nose at the dog breath, and sat up.

My body immediately complained with a host of aches and pains that reminded me of all the sex we’d had the night before. There’d been a Round Two, a little nap, then another go in the small hours of the morning. I couldn’t get enough of the man any day, but after a week of uncertainty? I’d been insatiable. Pretty sure he’d be feeling the sex for a while too, which made me smile into my pillow, smugly satisfied with the idea of wrecking Hunter.

He emerged from the shower, and I hopped in for a quick rinse, exchanging a kiss with him as I went. When I emerged, he was relaxing in my bed in nothing but his tighty-whiteys, which I found incredibly sexy. Something about the simple white fabric against all that bare skin…yum. There was a classic male beauty to it.

But just as I debated whether my body could handle climbing into that bed for another tumble with him, his lips quirked in a sexy smirk that said he knew exactly what I was thinking, my doorbell rang. Followed by the joyous yapping of Mookie. He wasn’t much of a guard dog, much too friendly, but he was a decent alarm system. He enjoyed a good bark at the front door.

“Expecting someone?” Hunter asked with the raise of an eyebrow.

“No.” I scowled. “It better not be anyone I know, or they’re in major trouble for interrupting.”

He laughed. “Want me to send them away?”

“No, I’ll do it. Stay in this bed.”

He grinned. “I like it when you’re bossy.”

I pulled on sweats and a T-shirt, then went to the front door. When I opened it, it wasn’t one of my asshole friends or a Girl Scout selling cookies or any of the other half-dozen scenarios I’d imagined.

It was Toby.

“Hi,” he said. “Can I talk to you?”

“Um.” I glanced down the sidewalk, spotting a bicycle on its side on my lawn, wheels still spinning. “Does your mom know you’re here?”

He ducked his head. “She slept in late. I left a note for her.”

“Okay, come in.” I glanced over my shoulder, but Hunter had stayed in my bedroom so there was no sign of him. “I’ll send a text so she doesn’t worry.”

I didn’t have Holly’s number, but I fired off a quick message to Hunter to let him know Toby was here and he should let her know it. That took care of two birds with one stone.

Toby followed me into the living room, pausing to pet Mookie who was dancing around with excitement. “Aw, he’s so cute,” he said, giggling as Mookie attacked with his tongue. “What’s his name?”

“Mookie.” At his puzzled look, I said, “Because he looks like a wookie. FromStar Wars?”
