“I think our show has been upstaged,” I murmured.

Hunter snorted. “Forget the show. I think our relationship has been upstaged. A secret husband? That’s even wilder than some fake dating to avoid your nana’s meddling.”

“Shh! I saw her in the crowd,” I said. “That woman hears everything. You’ll get me in trouble!”

Toby overheard me as we entered the house. “What’s going on? Why would you be in trouble?”

“I’m not unless this big mouth”—I pointed to Hunter—“lets Nana find out we only pretended to date when she fixed us up.”

“But you didn’t pretend!” Toby said. “Not really. You always liked him, right?”

I smiled and gave him a squeeze. “Yeah, I did. Couldn’t help it.”

“And you always will,” Toby said with a confidence that warmed my heart. “You guys love each other.”

“We do, and we both love you.”

The crowd oohed and ahhed over the refinished floors and staircase, the freshly painted walls, and the rugs and furniture we’d moved in to complete the picture. The kitchen was blocked off, with only the entryway and living room open to touring. There were more home improvement projects ahead. A lifetime of them, in fact.

“Who would have thought a few months ago that this old place could look so beautiful, huh?” Hunter said. “I didn’t do so bad.”

“You didn’t do badly at all. You’ve made a real home here,” I said softly.

“No,” he said. “We’ve made a home here. All of us.”

“Yeah,” Toby agreed. “It’s just like my re-enactment said. This house will be filled with another generation of family. Ours.”

“As long as we don’t have to go by the Ball-Sack name,” Hunter replied.

Toby busted into delighted giggles, and I laughed along with them, my heart full to bursting. Being a part of bringing this house back to life was a beautiful thing. But being a part of re-creating a family with Hunter and Toby was everything.
