I wonder what else I could do to make him blush…

“Okay, so if we’re really doing this, when should we do this date?”

“Well…”

His phone lit up. He raised it so I could see Nana was calling again.

“Better make it soon or I might get snagged by another man Nana has set after me,” Clark teased.

“You know, I was one of those men…”

Clark’s gaze snapped to me. “What?”

I nodded. “Yeah, before we met. Iola invited me and Toby to come to dinner sometime. She said something about this grandson of hers. He was single, like me, and readjusting to being back in Granville after leaving. We might have a lot in common.”

Clark’s face flamed even brighter, and he covered his face with his hands. I laughed and pulled his hands down. “No, this is perfect. Nana wants to set you up pretty damn badly, and we need this town to believe our date is for real.”

“What are you getting at?”

I slung my arm around his shoulder, tucking him against my body, and resumed walking toward his car. “What I’m suggesting is that I accept Iola’s invitation for dinner, drop a few hints that I’ve been lonely, and let Nana do what Nana wants most.”

Clark glanced at me, a smile blooming across his face as he caught on. “You want Nana to set us up.”

“Who’ll believe it’s not real when Nana spreads the word for us, right? And what better way to get her to stand down than to give her exactly what she wants?”

CHAPTER11

CLARK

“It’s my new daddy!”

Toby launched himself at me in the driveway of my grandmother’s house, hugging me around the waist with enough force to make me stumble.

“Shh!” Hunter called, strolling up the driveway behind him. “Play it cool, man.”

I laughed as I looked down. “I guess this means your dad told you the plan.”

Toby grinned and released me. “Yeah. He said it’s a way to get people to stop making you both date when you don’t want to, and that he wanted to make sure I was okay with it, which I am because you’re cool, and anyway, it’s not real.”

Hunter ruffled his hair, then slung his arm around his son’s shoulder. “I also said it was a secret, right?”

“I know,” Toby said quickly. “No one else is here.”

“You underestimate the nosiness of my nana,” I teased. “She’s probably watching us through the window right now. Hopefully she won’t hear what we’re saying, but I wouldn’t put it past her to try to read our lips.”

Toby’s eyes widened. “Really?”

I laughed. “Let’s hope not. But once we’re in there, you don’t know anything about this, all right? We’re all just friends for now.”

Toby nodded, puffing up a little. “You can trust me.”

I smiled. “I know I can.”

As Toby ran ahead to the door, I turned to Hunter. “He seems to be taking it well.”

“Yeah, he was pretty onboard with the idea, but I did make it clear to him that I wasn’t getting back with his mom. I know you said I shouldn’t rush it, but I also didn’t want him getting his hopes up that this was a sign I was waiting for her to come back to me.”

“That’s reasonable. How’d he take it?”
