“May their dreams find refuge,” Draven echoed from beside me, nodding at his sister a little awkwardly. He raised his glass and drank.

“Hear, hear,” Gawain chimed in. “To the Siabra Empire and to Aercanum. May we find true and worthy champions for our people.”

“To the fae and mortal dreamers,” Lyrastra said, looking down into her goblet. “To the hope that lies in dreams.”

“To those who possess the heart of a dreamer,” I murmured so quietly I felt certain no one else could hear.

I feared I did, whether I wished to or not.

CHAPTER 21

Javer was waiting inthe courtyard as Draven and I came out.

“If I might? A moment of your time, Lady Morgan.” Javer exchanged a glance with Draven and I realized he’d been expecting this.

I watched Draven walk away, already beginning to seethe.

“The prince has requested that you train with me, Lady Morgan,” Javer said smoothly.

Not requested thathetrain me. ThatItrain with him. As if I should be honored by the great opportunity.

“No,” I said bluntly.

Normally I’d have said something like, “No, thank you.” But there was something about this man I couldn’t stand. So why be bothered with the niceties?

Javer lifted his hand to his pointed beard and stroked it as he studied me. “From what the prince has told me, you possess considerable power. How many times have you managed to wield it?”

“He had no business telling you that,” I said furiously.

And the answer was twice. Once in Nethervale when Draven had been essentially passed out on the floor from his poisoned wound. The second in Meridium. When I’d turned Vesper to ash.

“The prince postulates that your magic is elemental. Can you confirm this?”

“He postulates?” I crossed my arms over my chest and glared at the closed door where Draven presumably stood waiting in the hallway.

“Apparently he was present the first time you used your powers, but was in no state to accurately describe them.”
