To something more tremulous and fragile.

To a word I had never brought myself to say even when I knew I had felt it.

For down below, my heart was lost in the waters.

If Draven never surfaced, would I?

Then, as if the world had held its breath with me, a wave crashed onto the beach below, sweeping two figures onto the sand.

Gasps and shouts filled the gallery around me. The spectacle had just soared to new heights.

Lyrastra stirred first, pushing herself up onto her knees, and coughing.

Slowly, she crawled across the sand to where Draven lay on his stomach.

Unceremoniously shoving him onto his back, she began to pound on his chest.

I didn’t dare to breathe.

Not until the moment he coughed and sputtered, water trickling from his mouth out onto the sand.

Rychel’s hand clenched mine tightly as her brother’s chest began to rise and fall.

Somehow, Lyrastra got him to his feet.

Staggering over the sand, she half-dragged, half-carried him to the door that had suddenly opened behind them and then they were gone.

On the other side of the chasm, Avriel dropped into the water from where he had climbed down the cliff face and began to swim towards the beach.

I had no doubt he would reach it. Fate had evidently decided that this was not his day to die.

The second trial was over.
