1st PROLOGUE

The trees were whispering. The moon was rising.

Deep in the heart of an ancient oak grove, a stone altar sat waiting.

Behind the altar stood three trees holding three bound women. White robes covered their youthful forms.

A man stepped forward. The grove itself seemed to hold its breath.

The eyes of the three women were wide and watchful.

There was a great darkness in the grove, despite the starlight in the space above the trees. And amidst it all, a feeling ominous and terrible.

The moon reached its zenith, climbing over the tops of the oaks, full and painted red as if it had been marked with blood.

The man drew a silver blade. Its hilt was made of bone.

One of the women spoke.

“Father, please. You don't have to do this.”

For a moment, the man paused. His eyes flickered briefly to the woman on the tree. Her hair was black as night and silver as the moon. She was very beautiful and very young and one of her names meant death, though she had known little of it.

Something not so dissimilar to grief shaped itself in the man’s eyes as he looked upon her. Then it was gone.

The world was very young.

The world was just beginning.

Evil was being born tonight, born into a world that might have been spared from ever seeing its face.

CHAPTER 1 - DRAVEN

My wife was gone.

I smashed my fist into the black marble pillar.
