That pesky nausea reappeared at the sensation.

In all my life, I couldn’t remember feelingcold. There was something innately icy about not having a soul, but this felt different.

Like I was empty and dragged along by a tether.

A tether attached to Dante, leaving me at his mercy.

What is going on?

“Do you know what this means?” Dante asked, his bright orange eyes wild and crazed. A fiery red ring wound around his iris. It was the only hint that something was wrong with him.

Well, more than usual, anyway.

I tilted my head, not sure what to make of it. Not his question, but his obsession.

We were in some sort of pocket realm. Okay.

I didn’t really care where we were. I caredwhywe were here.

What I couldn’t put my finger on was why Dante didn’t seem to care why we were here. Instead, he was intent on running through this place like a maniac.

But this break in the tunnels had finally made him stop.

For that, I was grateful.

“It’s a pocket realm, Dante. Does that mean something to you?” I asked, hoping returning his question with another question would make him pause.

Something was clearly messing with his mind, but mine felt perfectly clear. My memories might be fuzzy, but I was lucid, unlike the Hunter.

If I could get him to slow down, maybe I could do something about that.

Then we could get some answers.

Because we couldn’t stay here, whereverherewas.

There was something urgent we needed to return to, but my lips curled down as I tried to remember what that thing might be.

No, not thing. A person?

I ground my teeth together, ignoring the bits of bitter ash underneath my tongue. This place made my mind so fuzzy. The harder I tried to remember anything, the more lost I felt.

He blinked at me a few times as if my question didn’t make sense to him. Then he laughed.

Not the customary, husky chuckle I was more accustomed to from the Hunter.

But a deep, manic sound that made my skin crawl.

“Oh, not that. Over there. Do you see it?” He pointed across the expanse, not at the sky, but at a hazy area where silver sparks of light flashed in and out of existence, almost like lightning.

I narrowed my eyes at it, then blew out a breath. “Looks like spirits.”

That suggested we were, in fact, in Hell. Although, spirits could exist in other realms, too.

It still didn’t answer why we were here.

Dante jumped to his feet and a crazed look crossed his face. “It’s them, Hendrik. I finally found them.”

His lips stretched in a cruel grin before he launched toward the hazy mist, soon disappearing from sight.
