But I’m not hiding. I’m readying a trap that’ll fix all of this.

Hopefully.

Maybe.

We’re all going to die, aren’t we?Jasper asks unhelpfully in my mind—no doubt having heard my train of thought.

I frown. No, we’re not. Not if we stick to the plan. You let me handle Zy while you do your job, okay? Zane isn’t going to lure himself into a trap where he’s brutally dismembered.

I can almost hear Jasper’s murderous smile. No, no, he’s not.

Do you trust me?I press, eager to move on with my plan.

Because Zy was right. Iamnervous and I need my mates on board for this to work. Everything needs to go exactly as planned or we’re done.

Of course, my love,he says, his voice softening.I just wanted to add that even if we do die—

Wewon’t,I press. But he continues.

If wedo, then I will die happy knowing I won’t ever leave you. Because you’re mine, sweetheart. In this life and the next.

Spirits. I don’t know what I’ve done to earn mates like these, but my heart flutters at his words.

Be that as it may,I say, if you trust me, then trust me. Trust me with Zyran. Trust me alone. And trust me even when you can’t hear or feel me, okay?

Issy,he says, you’re not going to shut me out like Zy suggested, are you?

Jasper’s words fade away as I do exactly that, and Zy’s fingers thread through mine while I still look outside. The buildings have gone from modern townhomes to run-down slums.

“That’s my good girl,” he praises, making heat rush to my core.

“I hate it when you call me that,” I whisper. I could choose to talk to him telepathically, but I’m already struggling to wall out so many minds from my own. It’s easier to just speak aloud.

“Your blood pattern suggests otherwise,” he says with confidence.

I raise a brow at him. “My blood pattern?”

He nods, then turns onto one last street before slowing down. From the map I memorized many years ago, we’re in the unmarked area that’ll fit perfectly for a trap. “My sight does more than kill people, baby girl. I can also see the path of your blood. And right now it’s going right here.” He slips his fingers lower, tickling me between my thighs. “Which is a good thing because we only have about an hour, right?” He waggles his eyebrows when we come to a stop.

“Spirits,” I curse before roughly yanking on the door handle, rushing out of the car before I fall for Zy’s seduction.

I approach the rotten doorsteps to what must have been a beautiful mansion before Zy suddenly appears in front of me, using his vampire speed to his advantage. My surprised reflection looks back at me in his glasses.

He grins, showing a hint of his fangs that sends another annoying thrill through my body. “Are you ready for this, sweetheart?”

I frown. “I hope you mean the plan we’re supposed to be focusing on. Because yes, I’m ready to kill my enemies and tear their souls from their bodies.”

His grin widens. “Oh, I do love when you’re murderous, my mate. It’s excellent foreplay.” He holds out his hand and waits for me to accept it. “Shall we?”

I roll my eyes. “If you think you’re going to distract me with your pretty looks, it’s not going to work.” My words deny him, but my body doesn’t.

Placing my palm in his, my magic tingles with expectation. Which is probably a wise move. I expect that anything I touch in this ancient place will reek of death screams.

He seems amused as he slips off his glasses and pockets them. The hit of power from his green gaze makes my knees weak.

“As you say, baby girl.” His grin remains in place as he escorts me inside.

The door is locked, but a simple spell gives us entry. A hit of musty, stale air follows a current of history. The kind that has been lost for over fifty years since supernaturals took over this world.
