The voice on the other end of the memory continues.

“This is off the books, yes? Good. We don’t want the dukes to know of this one.”

“It’s close to the dukes’ headquarters, so it shouldn’t be too much trouble.”

An exchange is going on. I hold my breath as I watch the moment unfold.

“The reward, though, will be the information you’ve been seeking for a very, very long time.”

What are they talking about?

The male takes Jasper’s hand… and that’s when the exchange occurs.

He’s a mercenary. Of course I know what this is.

It’s an order for a kill.

And this is the moment Daithi’s magic bleeds into his flesh and tells him my exact location.

He’s complicit.

Spirits…

I let the tears flow as I open my mouth and force myself to speak.

“Jasper Justi, I reject you.”

Chapter5

Jasper

Idon’t know what the witchling saw in my blood to immediately reject me.

But I do know that I’m dying.

Not just figuratively because she rejected me. No, this is what dying definitely feels like.

It’s somethingotherthat slams into me the moment her words wrap around my soul andsqueeze.

This is her magic.

It’s powerful, incredible.

Magnificently deadly.

I’ve terribly underestimated this little thing. My entire body hardens on the impact of her words as it sends me stumbling back. I fall to one knee as I clutch my chest and rip apart my shirt.

Black spots sprinkle my vision as agony rakes through my veins.

It’s in my blood.

Her magic works fast, but I recognize it because it’s so similar to mine.

I just need to counteract it.

I dig my nails across my skin as I scream and draw crimson, trying to get to the fractured part of me that this little witchling so easily destroyed.

Rejected.
