He looked up at her, blood dripping from his maw.

Where’s Drasko? She whimpered when he didn’t answer, a vacant stare in his eyes. She padded up to him, whimpering when her paws slipped across the blood.Luc, it’s okay.

He let out a low whimper. They killed our baby.

No.Of course, he’d think that since she could shift. She nuzzled his shoulder as she recalled her dream. The goddess is keeping him safe. She said she will give him back to us.

When?

When the poison is gone. She nodded toward the pile of blood and bones. He shot me with a tranquilizer.

Luc licked her face. We’ll get you fluids.

Where’s Drasko?she asked again, panic tightening a noose around her spine.

Ears flattening against his skull, he nodded toward the tree line behind them. The Russians took him.

W-what?Her veins turned to sludge. What if they kill him?

I have a team following them.

But Luc was the Army’s best tracker. Drasko needed him. She let out a keening whimper. You must go after him, too.

You’re my priority now, Amara.Eyes narrowing, he flashed his fangs, blood dripping off his maw.And before you argue, it’s what Drasko would want. They’re not leaving Alaska with him.

Amara let out a howl of desperation then backed up when Luc advanced.Back in the cabin,he commanded. We don’t know how long the goddess will hold our baby. We must get that poison out of you before you lose him.

With a whimper, she followed her mate, knowing he was right while praying to the goddess to keep Drasko safe.

Chapter Nine

Amara huddled on thecot while wolves howled outside. Luc had said the trackers who’d stayed behind were scouting for more threats and guarding the hut. After Amara drank about a gallon of water and Luc forced her to eat an MRE, she had enough strength to use her healing magic on herself. That tingling in her veins slowly subsided, and then her wolf went silent. She didn’t know if she wanted to laugh or cry. Once again, she was useless, but the goddess must’ve given her back her baby.

“How do you feel?” Luc asked as he sat on the bed beside her.

She shrugged, her throat tightening with emotion. “I can’t shift again.”
