Hakon slanted a smile while rubbing his bearded chin. “I guess not.”

Amara stood on shaky legs, wringing her hands together. “Well? Are you going to tell us what they said?” Her voice rose and cracked, nervous energy pulsing through her veins.

Luc shared a grim look with Hakon. “Intel broke through the laptops.”

Drasko pushed off from his seat and faced his brother. “And?”

“First off,” Luc said, his voice turning grim. “We tell no one what we’ve learned.”

“No one?” she asked. “Not even my grandfathers and fathers?” She couldn’t stop thinking of her Romanian family. Being so close to Russia, and without the protection of the American Army, they were most at risk.

Luc nodded. “Our father Tor is going to Romania to speak privately with the Lupescus.”

She sat back down and swallowed back her fear, thanking Rone when he sat by her and draped an arm around her shoulders.

Luc took a long sip of coffee before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. “They were private Russian mercenaries, not soldiers. They planned on selling what they learned to the highest bidder.”

“Private mercenaries?” Drasko asked as he sat on the floor with Hrod and handed him another block.

Luc grimaced. “Most likely affiliated with the Russian mafia.”

Amara sucked in a sharp breath and Rone swore beside her.

Drasko’s eyes bulged. “Damn!”

Hrod dropped a block and shouted, “Damn!” mimicking Drasko.

Hakon covered his face, stifling a laugh. Drasko grimaced and mouthed an apology to Amara.

“The Russian military doesn’t know about us?” Rone asked.

Luc shook his head. “So far, it looks like they don’t.”

Amara leaned forward, icy fear coursing through her veins. “Will these mobsters seek revenge?” That’s what she was most worried about. After the last mercenaries killed two pilots and tried to rape her, she knew no depravity was beneath them.

Luc’s features hardened as he punched his palm. “If they do, we’ll be ready, but our agents took control of their submarine. They need to play nice if they want it back.”

“We’d give it back?” Amara blurted.

Luc gave her an apologetic look. “To form a truce, yes.”

“So what do they know about us?” Hakon asked.

“Just as I suspected,” Luc said after taking a long sip of coffee. “They know the Army is using wolves, but they think we’re trained pets. They have no idea we can shift.”

Offended, Amara jerked back. “Trained pets?”

“What happens if they ever find out the truth?” Rone asked him.

Luc grimaced. “The Romanian Amaroki will be most at risk.”

Amara’s heart stopped, then took off at a race. “We should move them all here.”

“We are putting measures in place should we ever need to relocate them,” Hakon said while giving Amara a look of pity. “The Army has already purchased land in New Mexico.”

“New Mexico?” she gasped, clutching her throat. That was so far from Romania.

“They won’t want to leave,” Drasko said to them. “New Mexico is nothing like their homeland.”
