“Why?”

“Because I washed my sister’s hair when she was younger.”

I ride his wrist slower than I rode the vibrator. “Why? Were you the babysitter?”

“Sometimes, yeah.”

“Your parents worked?”

“My parents were dead.”

I know instantly that telling him how sorry I am will make this whole thing stop. I know, because Jameson looks away. He’s only answering me because I’m using him to get off, and he’sveryturned on. A glance at the front of his pants confirms.

“Is that why you’re so mad?”

He grits his teeth. I roll my clit against his wrist in little circles and hook my other hand into the collar of his shirt. “Yes.”

It’s not true. That’s part of it, but not all of it.

“Is that why you kidnapped me?”

“It’s…” He sucks in a breath through his teeth. “More complicated than that.”

“Were you worried about me when I left?”

Jameson snaps his head around, meeting my eyes, and I swear one of those lightning bolts has come through the house to my heart. “Yes.”

It’s as true as the rest of what he said. He hasn’t lied. “Because you—” I didn’t expect to get this close to the edge. “Because you didn’t want your revenge plan to get screwed up?”

“Because you ran into a thunderstorm. There are high winds. A tree could’ve come down on you. You could’ve gotten struck by lightning. You could’ve stepped on a downed cable.”

“So?”

“You could havedied.”

“What do you care? I’m the person you kidnapped to make a point. Tell me what it is. Tell me what the point is, Jameson, because I can’t stay here losing my mind for—”

“I don’t want to lose anyone else.” He doesn’t shout, but his voice is loud and rough. “Do you get it? I didn’t want to lose you, too.”

“You’re only saying that because you want me to fall in love with you. That way, you’ll never have to face the consequences of what you did.”

Jameson laughs out loud, a big, rolling laugh. “I face the consequences of what I did every day of my life.”

“Is this making it better?”

“Yes,” he shoots back. “Because I get to look at you. And I like the sound of your voice. And I likeyou. I wish I wasn’t a crime scene, but I am, and I don’t care anymore. There’s nothing left for me.”

“Where?” I shout to match his energy.

“Anywhere.” This time, he’s so loud that he beats the thunder. Lightning cracks, and the light flashes starkly on his face.

I’ve gotten to him. This is the truth. He thinks there’s nothing left worth living for. I could never have imagined being so turned on in a situation like this. Maybe that’s why this worked at all.

“Bullshit.” I throw my arms around his neck and kiss him.

Jameson pulls on instinct, taking me all the way out of the tub, and sits down hard on the bathroom floor. I wrap my legs around his waist. The pain in my ankle is barely noticeable. My fall wasn’t as rough I thought, and when Jameson’s touching me, I don’t care.

He tastes like mint and rain. Jameson buries his fingers in my wet hair and uses it to keep me close. I’m the one who started this kiss. Wasn’t I? I can’t tell. He kisses me like I’m the last person he’ll ever see. He kisses me like he has thirty seconds to live. It’s searching and wild and I’m wild, too, because I grind down on his jeans, chasing sensation everywhere.
