“Of fucking course I have the app.” I flip to it on the screen. That wave, which apparently represents Daisy’s brain, is still at a fever pitch. “Did you do this on purpose?”

“Hercules, I didn’t know.”

“Yes, you fucking did. Youknewshe didn’t want you to come here.” It’s a rush of anger now. Bloodlust on top of bloodlust. “You set me up.”

“I swear I—” Zeus’s voice falters, then cracks, and it’s like a sucker punch. He’s telling the truth. “I swear to you. I didn’t know it was like this.”

“What—” A million dickhead questions come to mind. “What’s going on with you? Are you afraid your brother’s going to kill you?”

“No. Iknowhe’s going to kill me.”

“Because you’re…” What the actual fuck have I cannonballed into? “You’re not going to tell him what’s happening with Daisy?”

“Shane isn’t the only one who’s made promises.”

“Explain.” I actually don’t care what promises Zeus has made to anyone, but it hasn’t been ten minutes.

Zeus laughs. Sounds painful. “I was her favorite.”

“Her dad’s her favorite.”

“I took care of her when she was a baby. She came to me when she didn’t want to tell her parents things. I didn’t think she would keep—”

The sentence ends so abruptly that I think the call’s failed.

It hasn’t. This asshole is emotional.

“Stop it.Cry on your own time.”

“I’m not crying.” All at once, Zeus sounds like he’s at a cocktail party.

“You’re not going to fuck me over, either.”

“No. I’m not.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“It’s not a requirement.”

Jesus, I hate him. He sent me across the country for this woman, and now her life is in my hands, and it’s not just bullets I have to protect her from.

“Did you even tell her I was coming?”

His huff of a sigh saysno. “I called. She didn’t answer. I guess she didn’t want to chat between seizures.”

“Fantastic. You’re telling her in the morning, then. Or whenever she wakes up. I’m not going to be standing over her goddamn bed without any warning.”

“I’ll do that.”

“She wouldn’t want me to see her like this. She doesn’t need to know. It’s what I’d do for anybody on the battlefield.”

“Understood.”

“I don’tlikethis.” Because no matter what he says, how is it not a fucking trick? How does he not want me to fail this task so he can stop pretending he wants me in hisfamily?

“I don’t like it, either.”

I shouldn’t feel anything about that statement. Of course the man wishes I didn’t exist. Of course he wishes my mother had been honest with him so he could pay her off and never think of me again. Of course he didn’t want to choose me.
