“Because I’m watching you eat.”

“Mmm. I think you could stand to watch harder.” It takes everything in my body and soul not to leap across the room and watch her from six inches away. I’m going to come in my fucking pants. “Ifyou’re going to be this obsessed with me.”

“I’m not obsessed with you. I’ve been hired to protect you because you got shot at.”

She crosses her legs and eats another bite without breaking eye contact. “Okay.”

“I’m not.”

A shrug. “I said okay.”

“If you have any meetings or appointments, I’ll go with you. This doesn’t look like it’s going to be an open-and-shut thing.”

“What meetings would I have?”

My fingers. Her hair. I want it so much I can feel it.

“About your art, I’d assume.”

“No. I don’t have any art meetings planned.”

“Do you not want to sell your pieces?”

“Selling them won’t change anything.”

Another alarm bell, this one louder. “Say that again, and a little less cryptic this time.”

Daisy shakes her head like she genuinely didn’t mean to say it out loud.

“I don’t have any meetings planned to sell anything.” She stands, and her knees wobble. I see it. I know I see it. The bowl goes on the coffee table. “I’m going to bed. I assume you’ll be here in the morning.”

“I will be,” I say to her back.

Are you going to be here?

I don’t ask. She’s already gone.

One slip-up,and the man your overprotective uncle sent to guard you from a mystery man with a gun getsultraobsessed.

Hercules is up before me the next morning. When I come out of my bedroom, he’s sitting at the kitchen island, tapping away on his tablet.

He gives me a one-second glance. “Morning.”

“Good morning, sunshine.”

I feel him roll his eyes as I cross to the fridge. “You’d never let the sun in here.”

“Touché.”

“I don’t really think that was a touché-level point.”

I take out eggs with what I hope is a casual shrug. “In the interest of keeping the conversation going.”

“Oh? You want to talk?”
