“Give me the code if it’s clear right now,” I call to him.

“Midnight blooms,” he calls back. “Three, two—”

Shane opens the door with his free hand, and I get the fuck out of the house that’s now a target for every kind of nightmare. I put Daisy in the front seat. Her head lolls, body slumping, and I go for the back.

I slam the door shut behind me at the same time Shane jumps into the front seat and reverses hard away from the house. I have to lean up over the center console to gather Daisy and pull her back into my lap.

“Where?” Shane asks, his eyes pinning me in the rearview mirror.

“To her plane.”

I dial Zeus, wedge the phone between my face and my shoulder, and get the kit. This has to stop before we get on the plane, because we’re not landing foranythinguntil we’re home.

Abumpgets my attention.

It’s pandemonium on the street. Too much traffic. It’s never this busy. Red and blue lights from cop cars. Three men in dark suits are briefly lit up in Shane’s headlights, running for Daisy’s house.

“Hercules?”

“Is the plane ready to go?”

I hear Brigit gaspZeusin the background of the call, then quick footsteps. “It can take off in fifteen minutes.”

“It needs to take off in ten.” Take the cap off the bottle. Swab the top. Syringe. Check for bubbles. “We’re on the way to the airstrip now.”

“Okay.” Muffledthudthudthudson the call says Zeus is texting at the speed of light. “Hercules. Is Daisy okay?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“Guy drove a boat up on the beach and shot at the house. There might be more than one person.”

“Her house is secure. You can stay in the house. We’ll send more teams to—”

The meds go up tothatline. I turn Daisy in my arms, push up her sleeve, and tear an alcohol wipe open with my teeth. She doesn’t flinch at the cool, or the needle going in.

“She had a seizure while she was asleep.”

Something crunches, like an enormous fist made direct contact. Like Zeus’s fist made contact. “When?”

“Now.”

“Did you—”

“I gave it to her. It should be working by the time we get to the airstrip.”

“Hercules—”

“Is it going to work? Is it going to fucking work? Because she was asleep, Zeus. She was dreaming. What happens if this is every night? What happens if this is every time she falls asleep? Do you even know?”

“It will work for now.”

“How thefuckdo you know?”

“Idon’tknow.” I’ve never heard ice in his voice like this before. I’ve never heard him sound so much like Hades. “I can’t say anything for sure, and if you think I’ve had the luxury of beingsureall my life, then you’re a fucking fool. You wait and you hope, Hercules, that’s all there is to do.”

It has to be rage making my muscles tremble.
