“I’d be at his disposal for sure.” Her statement is a tease, but why does it come out as a flirt? And more so—why are the hairs on my neck standing up? I’m jealous. Why the fuck am I jealous? I can imagine that Luciano De Santos has access to many women, and I meanmany women. I’m sure I’m simply a notch on his bedpost. “Seriously, though, it seemed like you knew the guy and he wasn’t leaving until he got you alone.”

She’s not wrong. “He’s used to getting his way, but tomorrow, our lives will be focused on clearing his name and that of his company.”

“Are you going to tell me how you two know each other?” she asks, still standing in the doorway of my office.

“Maybe when you start calling me Anisten,” I quip.

“All right, Anisten, I’ll hold you to it.” She leaves, and I’m alone, with no one to blame but me. I never have a one-night stand, and the only time I do, I’m stuck with a man who thinks he not only owns the world, but me too. Yeah, we’ll see how it goes for him.

I begin to sift through the piles of documents his counsel brought for me. This will be an organizational process, and between Caroline and our investigator, Tuck, I’ll turn it over to them.

I’m in the middle of discovery when a knock on the door pulls me from my thoughts. It’s ten p.m. and Caroline had to have left by now.

I pop my head up, removing my reading glasses. The man I now know as the world’s most arrogant bastard helps himself in, a smirk radiating from his flawless and handsome face.

“We have unfinished business, Heaven.”

He saunters to my desk, laying his hands down in front of me.

“I never said you could enter, Mr. De Santos.”

He leans over further. “Yes, you did—Saturday night, as I slammed into you, and your body quaked with one fucking long orgasm after another.”

How can I ignore him, or what his words do to my body? I’m not sure I can, but I’ll try.

“You’re highly unprofessional, Mr. De Santos. Since you went to my boss like a little kid who didn’t get his way, I’m stuck with you, but I’m your lawyer, and it’s all we’ll ever be.”

He pushes off my desk, maneuvering around the chairs in front of me, and sits back as though he has no intention of leaving anytime soon.

“Sure, help yourself, like I’m not working on your case or anything.”

He extends his hands over his head, interlacing them above him.

“You will find I’ll help myself to whatever I want.”

After one night with the man, I have no doubt.

He pushes to his feet. “When we meet for dinner, we’ll have more of a chance to talk about the case. No business dress. Wear your best gown since we’re going to Alinea. I’ll send a car for you and…”

I stand to deny his offer. The first time he demanded the ridiculous dinner meeting, I had refused to take his case, and I assumed it was the last time I’d see this infuriating man.

“If you say no, I know how to go above your head, Heaven.”

This fucker will be the bane of my existence for the foreseeable future. Fuck me!

The clock reads six p.m. and I could use a couple more hours of research. Still, the seconds are ticking by, telling me I should begin the arduous task of getting ready for this silly dinner meeting. Luca has told me a few times that he’s used to getting his way. I’m positive he has a hidden agenda for tonight which has nothing to do with the case.

I push back in my chair, away from my desk, to formulate a plan in my head, all centered around declining his forward advances. I’m attracted to the man. This isn’t in question, but I’d sworn specific promises to myself when I graduated from law school. I wouldn’t get involved with a client. It’s hard enough to make it as an assertive female, but I’ll be damned to have others think I slept my way to the top.

Why does Luca have to be so sexy? And demanding and, in general, a pain in my ass.

Before I can answer my questions, the most challenging man,who isn’t sexyand has declared himself my enemy, enters my office. Jeffery Mann, a fully vested partner in the firm, like Penn, has seniority on me and could make my life a living hell, and he has.

Penn is my mentor and a good guy. He can be bossy, but he means well. Jeffery Mann is an asshole to outdo every other asshole in this world.

“Anisten, got a second?” He may ask the question, but he doesn’t mean it. It’s moreyou’ll make time for me, regardless, but I don’t bow down to the man.
