Looking at Lucas, I asked, “Is he going to? I thought he really liked Casey.”

“Yes, he’s going to,” Lucas replied as if it I should have already known the answer.

I rolled my eyes.

Sarah broke into our side conversation. “Read me the spell.”

For the next few minutes, I went over the spell, how I laid out the altar table, and even how I got a piece of his hair.

“I did stop and grab a snack in-between—eating for two, you know.”

Lucas looked at me and I froze. We hadn’t told anyone back home that I was pregnant yet.

“What did you just say?” Sarah asked.

“Nothing.”

“Oh my God…I knew it! I knew it! I even told Lucy I felt like the coven was going to be getting a new witch.”

“What?” Lucas and I both said at the same time.

“Hollie, you’re pregnant and the baby probably has your powers. And that makes any spell you do while pregnant that much more powerful. It explains everything now. This Benny guy is going to have double the good fortune fall upon him. Let’s just hope some of it comes in the form of cash.”

Lucas and I stared at one another.

“By the way—” Sarah paused, then screamed, “You’re pregnant! Oh my God, this is such amazing news! Congratulations to both of you!”

Smiling, I placed my hand over my stomach and said, “Thank you. We haven’t told anyone back home yet. I’m not that far along, so I’m sure you understand.”

“Of course! I promise I won’t say a word. Mom might sense it, though, like I did. If she asks, I’ll act like I know nothing.”

“Thank you, Sarah.”

Lucas pinched the bridge of his nose. “So wait, you’re telling me that our child is most likely a witch?”

“Yep,” Sarah said with a giggle.

“Is this common?” I asked.

“I’m not entirely sure how it all works. I do know that there are some children born of witches who don’t have any gifts. It’s rare, though.”

I slowly shook my head. “Okay, well, that’s something we’ll have to deal with later. In the meantime, if I do a spell, it’s more than likely that the little one’s powers will mix with mine?”

“Yes. Think about it, Hollie. She’s part of you right now.”

“Or he!” Lucas interjected.

Chuckling, Sarah replied, “Or he. Even though they’re most likely the size of a peanut, they could very well have the same gifts as you. That makes your powers that much stronger.”

“Like when you use certain smudge sticks.”

Sarah cleared her throat. “Um, yeah, I guess you could say that. I do think it’s a bit different here.”

I rolled my eyes, even though she couldn’t see me. “Of course I realize that. Well, crap. Maybe I need to lay off the spells.”

“Yes!” Sarah and Lucas said in unison.

Snarling my lip at the phone and then at Lucas, I huffed, “It could have been worse.”
