The bell above the door rang, and Sarah stiffened.

“What’s wrong?” I asked softly.

Snarling up her lip, Sarah turned on her heels. “Speaking of the devil himself.”

And with that, she rushed through the office door and back out to the store.

“What was that all about?” Lucas asked.

“Matt’s here.”

Rolling his eyes, he mumbled, “I’m never going to get used to that.”

I got up and went to sneak out when Lucas took my arm. “What are you doing?” he asked.

“Listening, duh!”

“Hollie, you need to let the two of them work this out.”

I started to laugh then quickly pressed my mouth shut when Lucas lifted a brow.

“Are you serious?” I asked. “You want me to sit back here and not even listen?”

“Yes. Let your sister handle it.”

I folded my arms above my swollen belly. “Aren’t you glad to see your friend back in town?”

“Of course I am.”

“Aren’t you looking forward to spending time with him, you, and Shawn?”

“Yes. The three of us were really good friends once.”

I nodded. “Well, if he pisses Sarah off, you better hope he doesn’t turn into a frog.”

Lucas scoffed. “Please—she can’t do that.”

The corner of my mouth rose as I sent him a smirk. “And I couldn’t help Benny save his pub.”

His smile faded. “Point taken. Just be quiet so they don’t hear us!”

Lucas and I slipped from the office and went into the back stockroom area. We tiptoed right to the edge of the small hallway that led from the stockroom into the store.

“Sarah, will you look at me, please?”

I couldn’t see them, but I assumed that was Matt’s voice.

“Okay, are you really going to act like a child and ignore me?” he asked.

“Oh shit,” I whispered.

Lucas groaned. “Can she really turn him into a frog?”

I waved for him to be quiet, and we both leaned in closer to hear better.

“I’m sorry, did you need something other than to tell me what an awful person I am?”

“Maybe we can start over. My name is Matt Merlin. You probably don’t remember me, but I used to live by Lucas when we were kids.”
