“My husband is a jackass.”

“That’s not new news,” Shawn stated, popping one of the olives I’d put out earlier into his mouth.

Lucas stood there, attempting to get control of himself. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. It’s just…”

He started laughing again, and that made Shawn laugh.

“Why are you laughing?” Kristin asked.

With a shrug, Shawn laughed harder.

When I saw that Kristin was about to start laughing too, I slammed my hands down on the table. Everyone jumped, including Charlotte—er, the baby.

“There is nothing funny about any of this.”

Lucas wiped away his tears. “Actually, there is. Hollie thinks I’m a witch!”

Right at that moment, Sarah walked in. “What?”

All heads turned toward Sarah, and Lucas whispered, “Oh no.”

I spun around to look at him. “What do you mean, ‘Oh no?’”

Lucas wasn’t laughing any longer. When the doorbell rang, Sarah and I both turned toward him.

“What did you do?” Sarah nearly growled.

“I didn’t know you’d be here!”

I frowned. “What do you mean you didn’t know she’d be here, Lucas? I told you she was coming!”

Lucas closed his eyes and said, “It was a crazy day, Hollie!”

“Tell him to go away!” Sarah shouted.

“God, I’ve missed family dinners!” Kristin said as Shawn nodded and tossed another olive into his mouth.

I rushed out of the kitchen and to the front door. I didn’t need to have powers to know who was on the other side of it. Drawing in a deep breath, I exhaled, put on a smile, and opened the door.

“Matt, I’m so glad you were able to make it to dinner. It’s so nice to see you again after all these years!”

He smiled and stepped inside. “Thank you for having me, Hollie. I wasn’t sure what to bring, so I brought wine…and these are for you since you can’t have the wine.”

He produced flowers from behind his back, and I found myself instantly liking the guy. “How sweet of you. Come on in—everyone’s in the kitchen.”

Matt followed me into the kitchen. I was going to have a long talk with my husband about not telling me who he’d invited over for dinner.

“Lucas, Matt’s arrived.”

“Hey, Matt,” Shawn said as he walked over and shook his hand. “Lucas didn’t mention you’d be here!”

Matt smiled and looked at Lucas who just shrugged. When Matt turned to me with a worried expression, I did the only thing I could do to keep him from feeling uncomfortable. “He told me, don’t worry.”

Kristin snort-laughed then cleared her throat. Shawn introduced Kristin to Matt.

“I don’t remember you from school,” Kristin stated.

Matt laughed. “I get that a lot. I went to a private school and then we moved to Maine when I was in the seventh grade.”
