The Bitch:She’s at the place in which I do not care to ever see you again...so don’t come!

I looked at Shawn. “What in the hell is she talking about?”

“They’re in the old cabin that is on Kristin’s family’s place. Where she used to live.”

“Why can’t you come?”

He looked away, then back at me, and I swore, he was blushing. “It was where I kissed her once upon a time.”

My eyes widened. “You kissed Kristin? When? Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

He shrugged. “It was nothing.”

“If it wasn’t anything, why won’t she let you come then?”

Shawn rubbed at the back of his neck.

Sighing, I grabbed my keys. “Come on, you can show me where it’s at and tell me on the way why Kristin doesn’t want you there.”

“I think I should just–”

“Right now, I don’t give a shit about what happened between you and Kristin. I want to get to Hollie. Let’s go.”

Shawn let out a long breath and said as he followed me, “This isn’t going to turn out good.”

As we drove toward Kristin’s parents’ place outside of Salem, Shawn filled me in on what happened between the two of them four years ago.

“I was helping her father with some electrical stuff because he’s best friends with my dad.”

“Yes, I know that,” I said as I tried not to speed.

“Anyway, they have an old cabin on their place at the back of the property, and he wanted me to take a look at the electrical box. He had some meeting he had to be in, so he gave me the keys, and I went by myself. Kristin was there, sitting on the front porch with a bottle of wine nearly finished off.”

I turned to him. “Tell me, you guys didn’t.”

He grimaced.

“I don’t even want to know right now,” I said as I pulled up to the small cabin. Kristin’s car was parked there but not Hollie’s.

“I should probably stay in the car and, um, watch it.”

Rolling my eyes, I got out of my car and raced up the two small steps that led to the porch and front door. I was about to knock when Kristin opened the door.

“She’s upset with me that I told you where she was.”

Looking past her, I saw Hollie sitting on a small loveseat, her legs pulled up and tucked close to her body. She was staring out a large picture window that overlooked a hill with a creek that flowed through it. The cabin was actually really cute; I could see why Kristin had lived here.

“Thanks, Kristin.”

She nodded and squeezed my hand. Then she looked past me and frowned. “That jerk came anyway!”

When she stormed down out of the door and toward my car, I shut the door to the cabin and walked over to Hollie.

I bent down in front of her. “Hey.”

She turned and looked at me, and my breath caught in my throat. Her eyes were swollen and red from crying.

My heart felt like it had twisted in my chest. “Hollie, baby.”
