“You too.” She smiled. “Say hello to her for me.”

I lifted a hand in a wave. “I will.”

Craig hadn’t made a good impression, huh? I wondered if he’d been shouting more stuff through the door. Later, we could ask Noreen. But the selfish part of me didn’t want to hear information I couldn’t act on right now.

Outside, I glanced around, my instincts high. What was his angle? Would he be the kind of man who waited and watched? I saw nothing.

The miles evaporated under my wheels, and all my instincts relaxed once I was through the front door and back home.

Gabriel and Jace were in the kitchen. “Where’s Sloane?”

Jace laughed. “She’s with Roman. Asleep. I’m just about to go up and bandage her feet. He ran into her while she was getting out of the shower and bundled her into bed.”

“Why do you look pissed?” Gabriel asked me.

I told them what I hadn’t been able to before about this morning and the note on the door. Neither of them were happy either.

“You’re right,” Gabriel agreed. “Something to be dealt with next week.”

I sighed. “Yeah. Now I have to see this snugglefest upstairs.”

Jace chuckled. “It’s pretty fucking adorable.”

He had a kit in his hand, and all three of us took the elevator up to Roman and Jace’s floor. The lights in Roman’s room were still bright. And it didn’t matter to Sloane. She was out, cradled in Roman’s arms. She was so small compared to him she looked like a doll.

And the look on his face…

Roman looked down at Sloane like she was a wonder. A miracle come to life. I recognized the way he held her, because it was the wayIheld her. Like he wanted to pull her so tight to his body she merged with him, but also not, so he didn’t hurt her.

“Having fun?” I kept my voice low.

Roman flicked his eyes up to mine for half a second. “I… don’t dare move.”

Jace crouched by the bed and lifted the covers to expose Sloane’s battered feet. She didn’t even stir. “I think you’re okay. She’s completely passed out.”

“She’s…” his fingers flexed against her body. “I can’t explain it.”

“You don’t need to,” Gabriel whispered from the door. “We get it.”

All five of us in the space felt like pure harmony. Something you didn’t know was missing until you felt the resonance humming between all of us.

I didn’t want to walk away, but both Sloane and Gabriel were right. My own body was fading. “I’ll be back to wake her in the morning,” I told Roman, setting her bag on the floor by the bed.

All I wanted to do was curl up with her, but she was here with us and safe. And it was everything.

* * *

Creeping into Roman’s room in the dim light of morning, Sloane still slept peacefully, and he did too. His hand was underneath her shirt so he could feel her skin where he held her, and it also exposed how very naked she was beneath.

One hand outstretched on the bed, I touched it gently. “Time to wake up, blue.”

Sloane stirred. “Nooo. Five more minutes.”

Exactly what she used to say to me when I woke her up for our actual classes. Our professor would roll her eyes and playfully throw a shoe, but we always made up our work, so it was fine.

“Can’t give you that today, sweetheart.”

Her gorgeous eyes opened and locked on mine. It took her mind a second to catch up to where she was. Then she smiled, pressing back into Roman. “Hi.”
